You know, it's not as good, as polished, or a luxuriously and elegantly simply french as French Taste, her second cookbook. (Nor as elegantly designed and typeset, for that matter.) But some good ideas in here all the same.

Much better than I thought it would be at the beginning. Really well written. A great followup book to read after the Omivore's Dilemma (which I just finished last month). It is sad and terrible sometimes to read about and be connected to the cycle of life and death, success and loss that runs the human condition. I cried when some of the animals were killed. I'm not sure I could kill my own animals, ever, but I appreciate knowing more about the animals that die to feed me, all the same.

It's not a bad YA book, definitely a different twist on things, doesn't shy away from the dark - if you love mysteries and capers, you'll love this (I'm not a big fan of either genre, but the main character is what kept me going even into the next book).

Not bad, but doesn't contain much of anything not already in the full version of JOC.

Kind of flat - a few interesting ideas. Could have done without the mysterious "supernatural" thread through it - the story would have stood on its own without it completely and would have been much more believable.

My hero Laura Calder was researcher for this enormous tome. While I'd personally be skipping the sections on innards, frogs legs, snails, and most of the seafood - squid is just not my speed - it's a wonderful recipe book full of authentic recipes, as well as fabulous information pages on how things "really" are in France when it comes to food. Also includes a fabulous section on cheese and how to choose it.

Written by a back-to-earth-er; it's not a bad book and does contain a LOT of information on how to have a farm, from living frugally and/or off the grid, gardening (actually, it's quite a good resource for gardening), animal husbandry, etc. It's a little uneven in places since it was self-published for the first seven editions, contains personal notes that are jarring at times, and overall gives the impression that ALL consumerism, urban living, etc. is bad and that if we all just switched to cotton clothing and making our own lye soap and canning or freezing everything, the world would be a better place. Perhaps that's right, too, but I can't completely agree.

I read this a while ago - don't remember a LOT about it but I do remember it included canned soups and was rather thin on the recipes.

I'm sure this would be a great book for beginners - those intimidated by longer recipes, more ingredients, more complex flavors. For me it was a little run of the mill, though there certainly are a LOT of recipes in this book. There were many recipes I wouldn't really consider casseroles - things you saute up and place together in a casserole dish, top with cheese and then broil for 5 min really doesn't make a casserole, in my book. :)

Not bad - love the bread section in particular - but was disappointed by the amount of "non breakfasty" foods in the back sections. Would have liked to see more brunch/breakfast ideas instead.
