I'm retired! Now maybe I'll have time to read! I was a school library/media specialist. That gave me an opportunity to share my love of books and reading with young people and gave me immediate access to so many wonderful books for children and young adults. I could not have had a more rewarding career. Now I am aware of time getting short. ... more »

A radio interview with NYT columnist Brooks enticed me to read this. He has presented current brain research in a easily accessible way for "the rest of us." He creates a recognizable couple and tracks their lives inserting the research along the way. There are extensive notes for specific pages for those wanting more information about the research but no footnotes in the text itself. This helps for those wanting to read the book like a novel. The writing is very good and I had a number of laugh-out-loud moments either from recognition of the truth of it all or from the smart writing. Near the end he refers to Viktor Frankel's wonderful book, Man's Search for Meaning--one of my great favorites.

Annie Dillard, what a writer! Her use of language is wonderful, a gem of a construction on every page. She lets the reader connect the dots so she tells a long story in not many pages. It makes me laugh just to see her work and how easy she makes it to read. But the story is a serious one. Lou waits for the love of her life, marries him and lives happily for 14 years. Then life happens some more. Whatever happens, her life is hers to live. This is her second novel. Still, it is her natural history and essays that are my favorites, wonderful as the novels are.

Nothing new here. Repetitive, simplistic. Suspect the author of merely wanting to sell a book.

Good insight into the banking debacle leading into the current recession. Details about the people who saw it coming and warned others without result. So they simply took advantage of the situation, buying credit default swaps and AIG insurance on them, then waiting until the final collapse to collect. Nothing here about Fannie and Freddie, however.

101 Secrets of Highly Successful People

The big thing I took from it was the dancing toll taker--but just so I remember:
    Be proactive
Begin with the end in mind
    Put first things first
    Think win/win
Seek first to understand, then to be understood
    Synergize
    Sharpen the saw
    A few other key points:
Paradigm shifts (your own personal experiences can change your perception)
    Personal mission statement
    Time management (organize around priorities)
Balance four key areas (Physical, Social/Emotional, Spiritual, and Mental)

Jack Gantos also wrote the Joey Pigza books. In his late teens and early twenties, for $10,000, he agreed to help transport hashish from Florida. When the boat got to its destination, the police were waiting. He was sentenced to prison. While serving time, he started writing. He had an early release under strict conditions which included going to school. He continued to write. This true story is at times harrowing, moving, and very scary. It is definitely enlightening.

  • Five Little Peppers and How They Grew (Adapted)

Mother is widowed (and poor) but the she raises five happy, well-adjusted children is relative harmony. My memory of the book which I read so many years ago, is of saving and rewinding the sewing thread used to baste a dress together. I had already, by then, thoughtlessly discarded miles of thread. It made me think about thrift.

I paid less than $2 each and brought two copies to the library in 1986; I was immediately deluged with requests. Our high school went through many, many copies of this little paperback. Very often, in requesting the book, a student would refer to the little girl's head being shoved into the toilet. Many years after it came out, requests were still being received for it and this was long before the well-publicized child abuse scandals of the late '90's and since. In 2010, those wishing to purchase a copy (it is out of print) can get a new one for about $43 or a used one for $19.

Sequel to A Child Called It. Not as grotesque as the first.
