You certainly have some older Sci-Fi books in your "to read" list. I tend to like “hard” Sci-Fi (science led) and upto date. Stephen Baxter is my favourite Author of this niche. Having said that I am planning to read Isaac Asimov's End of Eternity next.
I would be interested in joining you reading "Never let me go" someday.
Childhood's End is a very creative SF story. The original first chapter was re-written in the edition I read supposedly to bring it upto date however reality has again overtaken the events in that chapter and for me that partly spoiled the book. The world these days communicates electronically, encrypted if called for. You have to forget this if you are to get lost in the story.
I don't want to spoil it for you as the imaginative writing is wonderful. It is a rather slim book, barely more than a short story but it has found a place to lodge in my mind, I don't expect to ever forget it.
