    Oxygen

Good book although I felt it lacked a turning point, something during the story that took your breath away or shocked you. It was just a tale. Well narrated, as usual, but only a tale.
'Pure' and 'Ingenious Pain' definitely rank a couple of steps above this.

Book on CD performed by Rosalyn Landor

Everyone knows everyone in the small town of Stoneybridge, on Ireland’s west coast. Still, when Chicky Starr buys Stone House from the last remaining Sheedy sister and announces she will turn it into a special kind of inn for paying guests, most everyone is certain the plan will fail. When the young people of town are leaving for the big city, who would want to come to tiny Stoneybridge? But Chicky assembles an eclectic group of travelers for her opening week, and begins a new chapter in her life and in the future of Stoneybridge.

This is Binchy’s last novel, published posthumously. It’s evident that she loved the landscape and the people of Ireland and she conveys that beautifully. This is an ensemble piece and there are sections devoted to each of the major players. From Chicky Starr (who comes back to Stoneybridge after decades in America) to Rigger (bad-boy turned general manager) to Freda (librarian and psychic), the reader gets to know each of the characters dreams, disappointments, strengths and flaws.

Rosalyn Landor does a wonderful job performing the audio version. She is a gifted voice artist and has a wide repertoire of voices and accents which allows her to bring the many character’s to life. My only disappointment is that it is Binchy’s last work – I would love to be able to look forward to a sequel.

3.5*** (4**** for the book / 3*** for the audio)

Detective Gus Ramone thinks he recognizes a signature in the body of a local teen found shot in a community garden in a middle-class area of Washington DC. Twenty years ago, when he was just a rookie, Ramone and his partner Dan “Doc” Holiday” assisted veteran detective T.C. Cook in the investigation of several murders. The serial killer, dubbed “The Night Gardener” because the bodies were left in gardens, was never found. Now Ramone must wonder whether the murderer is back, or whether this is a copycat. Cook is long since retired, but the case still haunts him. Holiday is no longer on the force, having quit under a cloud of suspicion, and now operates a limousine service. But this boy’s death will bring all three men together in an effort to finish the work begun decades previously.

Pelecanos writes a tight, suspenseful mystery/thriller. I was completely drawn into the story and there were enough complexities to the plot to keep me guessing all the way through. The action is fast but he still takes time to carefully draw his characters, slowly revealing one layer at a time and demonstrating that the line between right and wrong, truth and justice, good guys and bad guys is frequently blurred. This is my first Pelecanos, but it won’t be my last!

Had I read the text, I would have rated this higher because the quality of the writing merited 4-stars. However, Pelecanos read the audio book himself. His lack of voice-over training means that most characters sound the same and with a fast moving plot it was sometimes hard to distinguish who was speaking. On the other hand, perhaps he was purposely going for that “jaded cop” quality. Audio gets only 3-stars.

Cait: Thank you so much for mentioning this.. I have added it to my wishlist. I love true stories/memoirs... especially about cultures and places that are foreign to me ;) This one looks very interesting! (the Kindle price is high, in my opinion. May have to buy a "real" copy.)

“Adel was not too naïve to know that the world was a fundamentally unfair place; he only had to gaze out the window of his bedroom.” (pg 204)
Hosseini opens with a story, told by a father to his two children, that portends the tragic fate of these two siblings in the years ahead. Rather than a linear narrative, this ambitious effort structures the tale through various point of views, each chapter serving as a short story for a character whose life intersects at varying degrees along the continuum to weave together 60 years after which the original story finally comes full circle.

Okay – After waiting painstakingly for four long years for another Hosseini nove,l I went to be early the night of the 20th and woke up at midnight to download it as soon as the calendar changed to May 21st to get started. My rule for a favorite author is to have read at least three of his/her works and to adore all of them. Hosseini has now officially passed the threshold for me. But, I think the reviews will be mixed for his latest work. There seems to be an interesting evolution in his work, or maybe it is in him as an author. His first two works could only take place within the context of Afghanistan’s history. With the Kite Runner it seemed Hosseini felt a need to relate the country’s history both the beauty of the country pre-Russian invasion and the devastation thereafter, while A Thousand Splendid Suns dealt with a more current climate even though both were done so through well drawn characters in complex relationships. In his latest work, focused on sibling relationships, the setting, while some interesting historical nuggets are mentioned, is really irrelevant. It is completely reliant upon the characters and the relationships. In my opinion, it is evidence that Hosseini is an author that is, hopefully, here to stay. So, I would caution the reader against the temptation to compare it to his previous works. That is not to say you won't Hosseini within. With Hosseini you know you are going to have your heart broken, and it will be broken multiple times here. You also know that, while you may have resolution, you will not have neatly tied up happily ever after endings. If you loved his previous work for his ability to paint a picture with words and his ability to speak universally to human emotion and shortcomings you will not be disappointed here.

    Some favorite passages:

“I proceeded with a mostly clean conscience, and with the conviction that my proposal was born of goodwill and honest intentions. Something that, though painful in the short term, would lead to a greater long-term good for all involved. But I had less honorable, self-serving motives as well.” (pg 83)

“For the first time, Adel felt truly aware of the broader movements that had always governed his life. And of the wildly conflicting truths that resided within a person. Not just in his father, or his mother, or Kabir. But within himself too.” (pg 209)

“I suspect the truth is that we are waiting, all of us, against insurmountable odds, for something extraordinary to happen to us.” (pg. 86)

“One thing I have come to see is that one is well served by a degree of both humility and charity when judging the inner workings of another person’s heart.” (pg. 89)

    The Burgess Boys: A Novel

The BURGESS BOYS is a journey into the lives of Jim, Bob, and Susan Burgess. They were brothers and sister whose relationship with each other fell apart after their mother died.

THE BURGESS BOYS centered on family, feelings, secrets, lies, and on Zachary's being disrespectful of Somali immigrants which caused problems for the Burgess family who already had many problems of their own. You will feel the tension among the three siblings as they try to solve this dilemma, and you will also see how it brings them closer.

Jim and Bob had become courtroom attorneys with Jim being the more successful one. Bob left the courtroom and went to the appeals court, and Susan is the one who stayed in their hometown and is now burdened with what her son did. She definitely needed her attorney brothers for this situation. She preferred Jim but Bob had to help her with Zachary's problem.

When Bob arrived at his twin sister's house, he didn't like what he found in terms of how Susan lived. He was sure this didn't help with how quiet and withdrawn Zachary seemed. Jim finally did intervene with the courts, and thought he had helped, but he wasn't too happy about helping his sister get her son out of this mess. As usual, Bob was in the middle of it all or completely left out.

The interaction of the main characters was very well done. Bob and Jim definitely were portrayed as rivaling siblings with Jim being the cruel one as he threw barbs and cruel comments at Bob. This wasn't anything different from their childhood, though. Their sister remained the sister in the background.

I enjoyed the great descriptions and well-developed characters Ms. Strout employed, but I wasn't a great fan of the storyline. I really was looking forward to this read and am a bit disappointed. THE BURGESS BOYS seemed to be a bit slow even though it was interesting to learn about the legal system and the life of the Somali people.

The ending focused on the Burgess children as adults thinking about their lives and alluded to the fact that your childhood shapes you as an adult in terms of how you feel about yourself and your life choices. I do have to say THE BURGESS BOYS did touch on some good subjects.

I can't say it was my favorite read, but it wasn't my least favorite. The major problem for me was the type of book it was. I like more of a saga. To me it seemed more like stating facts or a narrative.

The book did get better in the last 100 pages, but to me it still was not that interesting and was a little disorganized. 3/5

This book was given to me from a win on LibraryThing and the publisher without compensation in return for an honest review.
