This book is incredibly thick, and a little intimidating at first sight. But it's a great read. It's extremely informational and gives insight into the life, mind and cruelties of Hitler. Shirer writes in such a way that you're right with him as the story unfolds and takes shape. I felt the buildup to what I knew was eventually going to happen. And the book communicated the feeling of hate that was spreading like a wildfire towards the Jews.

  • The Pillars of the Earth

I'm reading this book right now! When I saw Oprah's endorsement of Pillars of the Earth, I knew it would be the next book that I would indulge myself in. However, the first few chapters were a drag! I put it down several times, but kept picking it up again because I was bored, but also because I continued to hear so much great reviews about it. Finally, I am hooked.

The remarkable thing about this Pillars is that there are little wars within and throughout the plot. Follett doesn't keep you waiting too long for the next little war when one has just passed. So just when you think the story might dip into a lull, he once again masterfully creates a conflict, one that the reader hardly sees coming. The characters are so well-developed, and we are given a candid look into the hearts of men and women of all ranks in life.

Perhaps what I'm enjoying most about this novel is that each main character wants something so dearly that they are willing to do just about anything to get it. Many times I am shocked by some of the things they do (especially the theatrics of young William Hamleigh). Now as I read, I'm hoping that all the characters who have been wronged and manipulated time and time again will receive their greater glory at the end. And then I can't wait to get started on the follow up novel!

A worthy read, but not one of Follett's best. I was so excited to start reading this book, but I found myself wanting more at the end of it. The characters were not particularly memorable, and the story just seemed to lack that 'oomph' like other novels by Follett. The buildup to the final mission by the Jackdaws gang was exciting, but it really didn't satisfy my expectations when it finally came.

  • David Copperfield

One of the reasons I think this book is so intimate with its reader, is the first person narration by David Copperfield himself. Characters come to life as the plot unwinds to tell us the experiences of Copperfield, whose universe is shifted by several misfortunes while still very young. It's interesting to observe how Copperfield's character matures as he meets and deals with all the different influences throughout his life. He accepts a hard, humble life, where he has to work twice as hard than everyone else for the things he needs. Without a doubt, this is one of Dickens' most beloved novels.

I didn't find this book as captivating as Roots was. However, it is a notable read and a compulsory follow-up to Roots.

I don't think there's any CSS guru out there that haven't read this book. It's a great book to learn CSS because it's simply, straight to the point. It doesn't make CSS seem like some rocket science thing.

Note: You should at least know html before you jump into this book.

A collection of magazine layouts and advertising design is found here. Some great, some boring and some not so great. It's an OK book but not my best in my design book collection.
