The novel is limited in expanse compared with Oz's memoir and much of his fiction. The author does not invest in grand civilisation points and symbolism.
The book is full of little posers.

At the heart of this epic saga is a vast ship, the Ibis in its tumultuous voyage across the Indian Ocean to the Mauritius Islands. In a time of colonial upheaval in the mid nineteenth century, it shows how fate has thrown together a truly diverse cast of Indians and Westerners on board. As they sail down the Hooghly and into the sea, their old family ties are washed away, and they view themselves as jahaj-bhais, or ship-brothers, who will build whole new lives for themselves in the remote islands where they are being taken.

Amitav Ghosh is a master storyteller.

Kinda liked the last para: "While the astronauts, heroes forever, spent mere hours on the moon, I have remained in this new world for nearly thirty years. I know that my achievement is quite ordinary. I am not the only man to seek his fortune far from home, and certainly I am not the first. Still, there are times I am bewildered by each mile I have traveled, each meal I have eaten, each person I have known, each room in which I have slept. As ordinary as it all appears, there are times when it is beyond my imagination."

  • Shane

It was required that we read Shane in high school but with this book, it wasn't so bad. As a western it obviously had great actions and twists. The only thing I couldn't stand with "Shane" the book and movie was an annoying little boy running around behind the Shane. It was quite annoying.

However, considering I read this book about 10 years ago and it still sits on my memory means it must be good.

  • Holy Bible With Deuterocanonicals/Apocrypha: Contemporary English Version
    • Rated 5 stars

I will agree with most that this is the best book ever written. Whether you believe in it or not the stories holds true to point us in the right direction, give us hope and set morals.

Like others it has impacted my life and given guidance and comfort in time of need. I do believe that any book lover should give this good book a read whether you believe in the faith or not.

  • The Canterbury Tales
    • Rated 0 stars

I cherish these tales....once read in modern English. The middle English versions will confound you...unless you can stomach it. The tales are happy, sad, passionate, some even boring - adventurous, romantic, mysterious, formidable.....just about whatever you're looking for. The Canterbury Tales will always survive the test of time.
