You start a discussion post in the group with a title along the lines of "Mary M's Book List". Every time you finish a book, go to that discussion and reply with the name of the book and what number it is. You can look at some of the other people's lists to get an idea. I do recommend that you bookmark your discussion post. We have so many active members that the posts tend to get buried quickly. As for the starting point, you can start whenever you want. If you've kept a list since January 1st, you can use that. If not, you can just start immediately and go a year from your start date. I hope this helps!
