I'm a librarian and a bibliophile, which I guess go together. I get most of my reading recommendations from my mother, but she's always got very good suggestions. My favorite genre is historical fiction, because I love to feel what it was like to live under those circumstances.

While I enjoyed the story of "Devil in the White City" more than this book, I think this author is amazing. I think this genre is called "narrative fiction", and I've never read anything like it. It is so well-researched and well-written. I would recommend people start with "Devil in the White City" first, but not because this one is of any lower quality. I plan to read everything he has written.

This was a really interesting book and I would have liked it a lot more if he had actually finished the story. The end doesn't explain how he got to NY or resolve his experiences.

It's really funny, but also terribly angering. I've worked for a woman like Mrs. X, they do exist. I thank God my former boss did not have children. I was upset at the end that she took the puppy even though she didn't have anywhere to live, but at the same time so happy that even if she couldn't save the little boy, at least she could save the dog.

Even though this is probably considered a young adult book, I highly recommend it to adults. It's dark, but a very cool story.

This is a disturbing and powerful book. I can't stop thinking about it even though I finished it weeks ago.

I'd give this 3.5 stars if I could. It was very enjoyable, though I had a hard time remembering which character was which, but that's probably just because I took too long to read it. It's very British in its language, I kept getting embarrassed by all the words I was unfamiliar with. But the story was good and very entertaining.

This is a very enjoyable book and an easy read. However, I didn't feel like I really got into their lives. I prefer the books of Jean Plaidy, her book about Anne Bolyn was incredible.

This is a deep book and really gets at some difficult emotions. At times I almost thought it was overly poetic, but it all worked well. She really gets you into the mind of a very damaged child/young woman, and her awful experiences. Yet the heroine in this story is by no means perfect, which she admits. When you first start reading it, don't put it down just because you don't like the main characters. I have a bad habit of that, but please keep reading! There are some amazing quotes and poetic passages that I will one day go back and copy into my journal. I think the one that stands out the most is Ingrid's description of regret being a chain, and not knowing if you should an individual link in the chain, or where the chain as a whole takes you.

I really enjoyed listening to this book. I have read Sea Glass as well. Based on these two novels, the stories this author writes are easy to read and I felt have a kind of superficiality to them... which I don't mean really in a bad way. I will continue to read many other books by her (easy, since she's written so many), but there are much more engaging books. I love the settings she chooses, this takes place in New England during the winter, Sea Glass on the Maine coast.

I got a prepublication copy of this at the American Library Association. It's a young adult book, and so somewhat simple. But very good if you take that into consideration. I really enjoyed this story, and it drew from a lot of beautiful European fairy tales.
