I'm a librarian and a bibliophile, which I guess go together. I get most of my reading recommendations from my mother, but she's always got very good suggestions. My favorite genre is historical fiction, because I love to feel what it was like to live under those circumstances.

REad Kate's recommendation of the Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time INdian - it is great. The author wrote that book you had to read when you entered Miami U. I looked for it on the book shelf because now I want to read all of his stuff.

    Greetings CROAH member!

We are now accepting nominations for the next group read to cover the fourth US President, James Madison.

Please send your suggestions via one of 2 ways:

    a) a private note to either Regina or Dog Lover (this method reveals your email address to us), or

    b) use the "Questions About this Group" text box found on the member's tab. This sends an email to both administrators and masks your email address.

Please do NOT post your nomination to the site's discussion tab.

Please include the title, author, and brief description of the book. It would also be nice if you included the Shelfari book page URL.

Nominations will be accepted through the 18th. Nominations will be posted and voting will take place through the 25th. We will post the selected book on the 26th.

Because we are approaching the Holidays a revised schedule will be followed for the remainder of 2009 and beginning of 2010. We will vote for the Madison read in October, post discussion questions in November, skip December, vote on Monroe reads in January, and post discussion questions in February.

A suggestion has been made to continue the extended reading schedule past the Holidays and provide 2 months between book selections. We would be interested in hearing anyone's thoughts on this. Would it help you? Would you lose momentum? Are you too busy to participate on the current schedule.

Please post your comments on this proposed scheduling change to the nomination thread found at http://www.shelfari.com/groups/34700/discussions/146618/James-Madison-Nominations-are-Open

The four books we've chosen since the group started have been fabulous. We look forward to seeing the nominations for the fifth.

    Thanks,

    Regina & DL

    Greetings CROAH members!

The nominations are in for the CROAH September group read about Thomas Jefferson.

You'll find the ballot at http://www.shelfari.com/groups/34700/discussions/137240/Vote-for-Thomas-Jefferson-Reads---September-2009

    This is a "ballot" therefore...

    Please vote only once.

Please indicate only a vote "for" - do not vote against a title.

Please do not include any sales talk or justification for your vote - just "yae" or "for".

The last 3 reads have been just fabulous. With this range of nominations, it looks as though we'll have another winner for our 4th group read!

Thanks so much to all of you who submitted nominations - great job!

    Lookin' forward to your votes,

    DL

I see you read Wicked. I noticed my administrative assistant reading Wicked and asked her if she liked it. She said yes and that she intended to read the other books in the series. I wanted to give her one for Administrative Assistant Day next week. What do you recommend I give her? Is the series chronlogical? Thanks!

I hear you talked Susan into Twilight! I still say they drugged the pages, making it an addictive substance. I read the last two in the space of 2.5 days. Just sat there reading all day, and then I went and saw the movie again last week. It really is better after you've read the whole series. How is the Southern Vampire series? I've got another good friend who is reading that right now as well.

That is very cool and a great way for studetns to see how fortunate they are to have such a range of literature to chose from. I bet the Harry Potter one really gets them!

I have not read the Book Thief, but have been seeing it discussed in many of the forums. It looks interesting though. So, what have been some of the favorite banned books? That does sound like fun. I like the food idea!

That is understandable and a good point. The book does make you think about how much we take for granted. I can't imagine living in a society where reading whatever I choose is against the law.

I've read both. I had a problem with the Messiah Complex of the author of Reading Lolita in Tehran. I kept putting the book down because of my frustration over it. But, I finished it. I will say, however, that I saw the author (sorry, can't remember her name) on C-Span a couple of weekends ago. I found her interview to be much better than her written word. I really enjoyed Three Cups of Tea. Another good example of someone following his or her passion to help others. If I were to chose between the two, I'd definitely go with Three Cups of Tea.
