My name is Martina. I read nearly everything: Literary fiction, poetry, thrillers, true crime, psychology, philosophy, children's books, books on Lucid Dreaming and cookbooks, exercise and nutrition books, The Bible/Koran/Book of Mormon, books on Hinduism, Roman Catholicism, Buddhism, Fundamentalist Christianity, self-help, pet help--the list is endless.
Almost everything interests me.
I'm a writer of poetry and fiction. HUNGER is my newest collection of poems. I am also the author of: NOT UNTRUE & NOT UNKIND (published 3/1/06 by Arabesques Editions), and RUNNING LIKE A WOMAN WITH HER HAIR ON FIRE: Collected Poems, (published 9/1/05 by Red Hen Press).
A memoir: LIMA BEANS AND CITY CHICKEN: TALES FROM THE OPEN HEARTH , was published by E.P. Dutton and Co., New York, 1988. A second book—a novel, THE STAR JASMINE CLUB, was also purchased by E.P. Dutton in 1989.
I have been included in Ascent Aspirations first Anthology and
have been widely published in literary magazines such as: Amelia,
Bellingham Review, Connecticut Poetry Review, Context South,
Iowa Woman, New Laurel Review, Passages North, Pedestal Magazine, Piedmont Literary Review, Southern Review of Poetry and many others.
I write about what faces the average human being in just living each and every day without too much pain or too much stress or too much anger and the urgency and challenge of coping with those things. I write about the comparisons between the huge/small things that make us happy and the small/huge things that make us sad. My words call to men and women to dance out their lives, not drag through them; sing out their anger and lust and sensuality, not hide these things under ladylike, lowered eyelids. My poems call to all individuals to see more, see further, be more and better and, again, more. I write about expectations and our ability to fulfill them or fail to do the same.
