  • The Titan's Curse
    • Rated 3 stars

The Titan's Curse, is big on action and thrills. Events and adventures come thick and fast. If there's a crucial difference between the earlier two books (in the series) and this one, it is in the humor department. The goofy humor that marked the earlier two books is present but Riordan this time limits the hilarious interludes. My review of the book at: http://tinyurl.com/yjr6k7
Readers would love the fast pace and the excitement of the adventures that befall Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson. There's something dramatic happening on every other page and never does the pace falter. It’s the kind of book you compulsively read in a single sitting over a few hours.

If you appreciate the simple things in life, if you want to know what is it that makes children find so much joy out of life, read this book and you'll treasure its simple but deep wisdom.

  • Local
    • Rated 3 stars

    My complete review: http://tinyurl.com/ygqgen

The novel is quite interesting and has a confident voice. It's a tale that's amusing and witty in parts, and in many places, poignant. Local shows us a part of the Mumbai experience very well — the commute, the alienation, the dysfunctional relationships, the hope and the spirit unique to its people — and there will be many readers who will be able to relate to numerous experiences described in the novel. There are many "Mumbai as I have experienced it" moments in the book. But the book's appeal surely transcends its setting. While Local is undoubtedly a "Bombay Book," it can be read with much interest by people anywhere for ultimately the book is more about human experience than it is about a setting.

  • Show Business: A Novel
    • Rated 3 stars

    My full review: http://tinyurl.com/ylquzx

Notwithstanding its serious agenda, Show Business is a light and easy read. Show Business, I feel, is not as good as the two other fictional works by Shashi Tharoor: The Great Indian Novel and Riot. But it suffers only slightly in comparison. First time readers will find Show Business quite entertaining. A second reading, while it would still amuse, would also bring out the underlying serious concerns of the novel.

  • The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency
    • Rated 4 stars

    My complete review: http://tinyurl.com/ygd6tv

The book (unlike other detective mystery books) is not dark and full of evil, but as bright and sunny as the blue African sky. The character of Mma Ramotswe doesn't inspire fear or awe but instills a quiet confidence and hope. Unlike most detective novels it may not be fast-paced but nevertheless it is a lovely read. It is fun and lighthearted, a novel that affirms the beauty of simple living and stresses the inherent goodness that is in everyone.

  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
    • Rated 3 stars

    My complete review: http://tinyurl.com/yhzgmm

Rowling uses the overall search for the identity of the Half Blood Prince to maneuver characters and the various strands of the Potter plot into position. The dominant theme of The Half Blood Prince is the tying up of loose ends in preparation for the final narrative to come.

  • Wicked
    • Rated 5 stars

    My complete review: http://tinyurl.com/ydu4qm

In Wicked, Gregory Maguire has re-created and populated Oz with the power of his own imagination. Fantastically real, after reading this novel you will be unable to see the Wizard of Oz in the same way again.
I believe, Frank Baum himself would be flattered.

  • The Other Wind
    • Rated 5 stars

    My complete review: http://tinyurl.com/ymm6b2

The Other Wind is a very satisfying close to the Earthsea series. It very nicely extends the themes and concerns of the earlier books. It might not appeal to readers who prefer thrills and wizard duels and spells at the turn of every other page. But any one, who loves fantasy and wants to read the work of a master, should find The Other Wind worthwhile.
