Thank you for telling me more about why I shouldn't read 'Fallen'. I will consider the Philippa Gregory books.

I agree with Lynn A. Read the books in order, and they make the most impact. I was really torn in my reaction to the portrayal of Liir (the son of the witch) in both books. He's immensely talented, but never really gets his full respect from the author or from the other characters in either of the two books. He's kind of portrayed as a sniveling, not-so-smart bumbling do-nothing in Wicked, and, even though he embarks on an important enough quest as the epic premise in Son of a Witch, it's as though he gets demoted to mock heroic at best, and derieded and dismissed at other moments. Maybe I was in the mood for a more straightforward and clearly defined hero tale, so chalk that ambivalence up to my own lack than anything absent from the book.
I still enjoyed reading SOAW, especially since I love Maguire's well above average command of the language. Since there is such a clearly plot-generative ending to SOAW, do you know if there are any sequels planned, or maybe one already in print that I'm not currently aware of?

    Thanks,
    Darren
