I read this book because I heard they were filming part of it in the little town where I work and live nearby (Enon Valley, PA). Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to watch the movie! The first two nights I read, it was late at night and my four year old son was sleeping beside me...I had to put the book down because I thought I'd have a panic attack! It was hard not to imagine myself trying to protect my own kids if such a thing ever happened...I do think McCarthy did a good job with making the characters real to the reader.

But, I always finish a book I start, so I took it to work with me (I'm a teacher at a high school) and read it on my free periods the rest of this week, until I finished it. (Besides, I wanted to know what happened to them!) It was not nearly as threatening in the daytime among a ton of teenagers.

I found the lack of punctuation distracting first and sometimes hard to follow the conversation between them. Also, I feel it had loose ends. A few flashbacks of his wife that are never tied together, mention of people stocking up on supplies, burning snakes and then towns with people, and African coins and Spanish ships? I was expecting to find out what happened to the world - that maybe all of these things would add up to something.

I was disappointed in the end too because I wanted to know where life took the boy...even if was only to see more detail of how he settled with those people - who were they and how had they been surviving? Especially with all the mention of the boy being a "god" and such...I didn't expect him to really be some kind of "god," but I expected a little more to happen and give me an idea of what was meant...maybe it was just the fact that he survived?

My overall rating would be okay.

I liked this book. I liked how Chad ended up hitting it off with the guy he hated in the beginning. He's really able to mature through something reasonable, like work (I love these practical characters)!

This was a pretty good mystery. Even though I caught onto who the murderer was way before she did, it was still interesting.

I absolutely loved this book!! It was funny and it described me to a tee...there's nothing better than realizing you're not the only one that feels a certain way.

This is more of a thinking book. You can't really read Ayn Rand just as a good story - you have to be ready to absorb and turn the ideas over in your head. I've read a few Ayn Rand books and she always had a point to make. Her characters and story were just ways of giving her opinion on a topic.

This is a great coming of age novel about a young girl whose tragic loss dominoes and thrusts her into a life she never expected. A life that changes her into a completely different person. But, it is also a story of hope as she finds her way back to the people she still has and once again finds herself. When you think you have it figured out, you don't. I measure a good book by how well I can guess the ending. I was wrong this time! That's good.

This is a simplified, kids version of the classic book.

Good ideas for classroom management strategies. Even if some of them wouldn't work for you, you can at least use these ideas to come up with others - or switch parts around and fit together something that works.

About a mentally unstable child and what the mother has to do about it to keep the rest of the family going....makes me grateful for my healthy kids.

May be some sort of classic, but I was bored to death. Plus, the plot switches around in the end. You start out with Mary as main char. and it switches and ends with the focus on Colin...Mary fades away into nothing...weird.
