I'm an anthropologist and an avid reader! In my day-to-day work life I don't get much time to read for fun, but when I'm working overseas that's all I can do because I rarely have electricity, tv. etc. There's nothing better than a good book recommendation and I look forward to discovering something new!

Thanks, Laura! I will be picking up 'Angela's Ashes' as soon as I am done reading 'A Time to Die' and 'The Mayflower' I will refer to your shelf often.

Yes me. A lot of this has been happening lately. Women targeting folks like me. No clue who the lady is. Have been receiving text messages on my work cell phone from Russian ladies asking for relationships too but this Hellyn does not look Russian.

Regarding books: Kremlin Rising and Lenin's Tomb are excellent accounts of politics and life in Russia since 1991. Very topical now too since Russian election fever is building and Russia's prominence in the world increases.

If you liked The Piano Tuner, maybe you would enjoy the "Southeast Asia" group.

Hey Nerd, You still visit this page? Just wanted to send a book recommendation along since I know you will be overseas again soon... (hopefully you can get a little fun reading in!)

It is "the glass castle" by jeanette walls. A super easy read - only took me a day and a bit to finish it. It is a memoire about growing up with these really eccentric parents. My mom got if for my birthday and I was totally uninterested but I couldn't put it down. Not a great piece of literature by any means but brings up interesting discussions....

Anyhow - just thought I would mention it :-)

Hey Babe - wow this thing is addictive! I love it though - a great place for discovering new books! "The Known World" is an excellent book - Oprah called it the best book she had read in 10 years and it won the pulitzer prize. One note of warning (because I see in the amazon reviews someone used it as a criticism) - the author refers to census and news reports dating back to the time/era. I never thought they were "true" but apparently one reviewer did and felt somehow robbed because he was - I don't know - lieing or something to her? Anyhow - the book is beautifully written. Could you tell me a bit about "Atonement" and "Don't lets go to the dogs tonight"? Do you think I should pick them up? Oh by the way - I found k on here so have added her...
