Needless to say: I love reading! I read all sorts of literature, but my favorite genres are fantasy and historical books, also a bit of crime for relaxation and ... well, lots of children's books (I'm a childrens librarian and have two kids of my own... more »

Being online at work a lot (I'm a librarian) I don't keep up with my Shelfari, but seeing that you like humor (e.g. Terry Pratchett whose every discworld I have read) and keep up with teen lit I recommend Beauty Queens (see my recent review) as it very funny (including but not limited to trenchant political satire) about Miss Teenage America contestants crashed on a desert island (sort of). The overlap of our reading is considerable (as I don't post anything I read before I joined Shelfari there is a lot missing like most of Robin Hobb, Terry Pratchett, Jack Whyte, Robert Jordan, many classics etc.) but I was surprised to see that you have read The Fencing Master which was recommended to my by a fellow library worker who does fence (although he was a basketball star in high school) who is aptly named Gabriel Rapier. I've never met anyone else who has read it. I do enjoy browsing your book shelves, but I only get around to it once a year. The Speech of Chief Seattle? Great thoughts.

    Hey!

Haven't been able to keep up on Shelfari. It seems you're in the same boat. What do you say to letting others help admin?

Don't forget to sign up to pick one of this month's authors over at Author, Author. Check out who we're reading this month, and help us pick for next month. Just find the discussion titled "Sign up to choose February's author" and put your name in the hat.

I see that you're reading some Tamora Pierce. My earlier readings of her predate Shelfari, but I highly recommend (see my reviews) Trickster's Choice and Trickster's Queen. In our library these were in the teen section. Also I was surprised to find that you had read The Fencing Master. I hadn't heard of it until a library fencer recommended it to me.

Well, you're looking at 40 years of reading. Actually it's just a fraction of my forty years of reading. I'll never remember them all. I usually have at least 2 books going at once -- one fiction and one non-fiction. I'm having a little trouble getting through The Outliers, since I am not much impressed by Gladwell's books. I wish I hadn't bought this one. Already Dead, by Denis Johnson, however, is plenty good. I see a lot of Kerouac in him, and maybe a touch of Faulkner. My sin recently gave me a bio of Krushchev, which will probably be my next non-fiction.

Thanks for accepting the invitation. Yes, I like Beagle and Pratchett -- many wonderful books between them. Read a truly amazing short story by Beagle recently but can't recall the title. Danish? No. That would be nice -- but in the world of publishing I am a dust mite. Maybe some day. We shall see.

I saw that we had a lot of books in common, as well as a mutual distaste for the Twilight series. I am wondering if you can recommend a series, or a book along the lines of the Chronicles of Prydain, by Lloyd Alexander.

JARS is starting East of Eden next week. As we read, remember to post your thoughts, notes, and/or questions. Don't forget to acquire a copy of Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters because we'll be reading that immediately after. Can't wait to see what everyone has to say!

    I øvrigt:

Hi Loweyes! I'm from the Author Author group and just wanted to welcome you to our group. As you might already know, January's "featured" author is Neil Gaiman, and we have two "secondary" authors, Ursula Le Guin and Terry Pratchett. If you're interested, you can choose a book written by one of these three authors, and after you've read it, please come post a review and star rating so the rest of us in the group know what you read and whether you liked it or not. Happy Reading!

I know my welcome is a bit late, but we're just getting caught up!

Which French or Dutch graphic novels would you recommend? I really like everything I've read by Joann Sfar. I will check them out, sure.
You should read Sabriel before you read Lirael, it's the second in a trilogy.

Thanks for adding me, it's a nice thing when someone either finds you interesting enough or shares your tastes enough that they want to add you as a friend. That's cool you read graphic novels--which genre do you tend towards? Ummmm favorite books you should read; lemme think. Something I just recently read that I really enjoyed was Skullduggery Pleasant, one of my favorite fantasy/sci-fi books is Lirael and one of my favorite graphic novels is Blankets. And one of the best books I've ever read was Understanding Comics.
