“Running To Get Ahead

Rose was married to Donavan, who was a very abusive husband. She didn’t finish school and she got pregnant early. He wanted to keep her down and be the breadwinner of the family. She runs away with her daughter Crystal and heads to New York where her uncle Myles and his wife Wendy live. In New York she gets reacquainted with a guy she knew from high school in Jamaica, Calvin.

Donovan, seeing that Rosie has moved forward with her life and she finished her college degree, knew she wasn’t going to come back to him and makes a move. There is a confrontation, and some truths are revealed.

Sandra Ottey’s “Runaway Comeback” is a great book. It flows well and it is very interesting, holding readers’ attention from page one until the end. The title is very appropriate and it is explained well in the end of the book. It has some nice, unexpected twists and turns that will leave readers wanting more. I can’t want to read the next book in this series.

Vicky Lester was nineteen when the book began. Deep blue eyes and the child of an angry alcoholic. John Lester, Vicky’s step father, put up with Mary Lester because he loved her. Mary Lester was a functional alcoholic who worked at a local supermarket as a cashier. After work Mary was always found drunk. Mary told Vicky that “she should have flushed her down the toilet, and that she was a slut.” Vicky thought of herself as a slut. With low self-esteem and a banging body, she played the sex card.

Vicky sought vindication. Vicky survived parental neglect, child molestation, sexual abuse, sordid secrets, choking fear, horror and entrapment.

Vicky, however, had one real friend. Stanley. He never judged her and loved her for her inner beauty. Stanley always told Vicky the truth.

This was a hard read for me. “A delicate little girl was tortured and tormented without cause.” A bird can’t survive unless it flies, and it can’t fly with broken wings.

I understood the story line and development of “Vindicating Vicky.” I applaud Mr. Knight for taking a risk from a man’s point of view. The plot is filled with twists and turns. This novel was consistent and accurate for sexual assault and PTSD. The silent voices of female veterans returning from the silent war are recommended to read this book.

Any woman made to feel as a sex object regardless to their feelings or desires is seen time and time again on videos and society with no voice to speak for you. Vicky is your vindication!

While exploring a new level of sexual freedom, Nia can’t help but also be consumed with Prada, a businessman with whom she is intimately acquainted; Bret, her workout partner with whom she shared one night of bliss; and her first love, which ended in heartbreak and betrayal that still lingers.

DECADENCE whisks readers headlong into the private adult club. A place where fantasies are fulfilled, voyeurism achieved. Dickey succeeds in capturing Nia’s world and emotions in word. Nia is confident, beautiful and strong, but deep down, she has insecurities. She remains a fascinating character.

DECADENCE is a slow, lazy read, but in a good way. Slow and lazy like a Sunday evening drive. Not a lot happens, yet a whole lot happens. It gives Dickey plenty of opportunity to use his words and that’s exactly what he does.

Some readers may have problems in following Dickey’s plot because there is a lot of sex. A lot of sex. But it’s sex with substance. With a story. With emotions. With history. With purpose.

When people saw I was reading this book I was asked repeatedly if it was good because opinions varied so greatly to both extremes. I’ll say this: Dickey is a beast when it comes to words. Period. Point blank. And in that order! If you are a prude or not into heavy erotica, this is NOT the book for you as his imagery is phenomenal. He has a way of evoking all five of your senses and placing you right in the book along with Nia. This is definitely grown folks reading. If you want a microwavable book, you know, like so many books today. A book that’s quick, fast and in a hurry, this is NOT the book for you. Dickey takes his time, nice and slow. If you want easy and simple prose, this is NOT the book for you. While you won’t need a dictionary to read this book, there’s a lot to digest. Nia’s journey is one narrated by a literary master.

I enjoyed my time with DECADENCE. It is not a book for everyone. I’d recommend it to any old school reader who enjoys grown folks reading and words. You know, like the way it used to be…

At the impressionable age of 14, Lamont "Limbo" Adams had already calculated that he was a kingpin in the making. He grew up poor, hungry and frustrated and decided to cash in early on being the best that he could be.

"The streets or us," the ultimatum delivered to him from his mother and then his wife. After making no decision, the wrong decision is bestowed upon him causing Limbo to be jammed up. As a result Limbo loses his family and in case that's not enough, the house he's identified as home goes up in smoke taking his net worth with it.

Francine Rhapsody Parrish is a college student majoring in psychology. She has been vying for her chance to get into Limbo's corner. It's not until he's jailed that the opportunity arises again and she freely gives him a `piece of her love.' Rhapsody quickly earns her badge as Limbo's friend, a rider, and eventually wins as he crowns her his queen soldier.

Jayme Johanson is an FBI agent with bitterness towards Lamont "Limbo" Adams. She took an oath to uphold this country, which includes obliterating him and compensating her and her colleagues for all of his years of crime. While trying to build a successful case to incarcerate Limbo, Jayme finds herself green with his live in girlfriend Rhapsody, who has everything she's ever wanted in a man.

With an unexpected vendetta brewing, Limbo becomes a victim to reconstruction. In a hail of gun smoke it becomes a situation of win, lose or draw.

WHITE HEAT written by Oasis is a quick read. The story is on an automatic flow, with plenty of interesting characters and a captivating story line. My main issue is that the book stops, in the mist of the climax. While readers can easily piece together how the story ends, sometimes you want to know that you've walked through the end. In this case, there are just too many scenarios left open. While I am not a fan of sequels, Oasis’ pen may just be what it takes.

Imagine years after our first black president was elected to office for a second term that he was assassinated and a Republican takes his place. Imagine yet another hurricane that leaves many without homes and dead in the year 2018. Imagine that the stock market crashes and plummets the economy worse than what anyone could have ever imagined. Ordinary citizens are forced to do things they would have never thought they would be forced to do. Food, shelter and anything else that is needed is traded for services or any odd jobs they can do. Those that live in the housing projects, young and old, are ordered to take on cleaning of the buildings and if they refuse they will suffer eviction or possibly something even worse. Interracial marriage is deemed unlawful. Gays and blacks are brutally beaten or murdered.

One woman is tired and she takes matters into her own hands at the dismay of her husband. Although he feels like she is taking it to the extreme, she sees it as justice and standing up for those that are too afraid too.

“Strange Fruit” by Michelle Janine Robinson was a very interesting read. I just hope and pray that this is only an author’s imagination and her creativity at work, because if this author happens to be able to predict the future, we are all in a world of trouble. But seriously, this was a story that has the reader thinking “What If?” The only issue I really had with the story is that time seemed to skip ahead too quickly. The story was good but the story sped through time at warp speed. Other than that, I would have to say if you’re looking for something different and a little out of the box from the norm, then this would be the book for you. It was a quick read and will keep the reader engrossed.

He meets an ex pimp named Trust who runs the laws, rules and regulations about the pimp game to him. Ricky, who has always had a gift of gab, decides this is the road he wants to go down.

“Let Me Pimp or Let Me Die” is an ok read. The title is very appropriate and it stayed true to the subject matter. Mayo gives readers a few twists and turns but there are no real surprises in the book. There are issues with editing.

If you are looking for a straight up, in your face read on the game of pimping, then you will enjoy this book.
