I am a professor of education (reading and literacy) at Birmingham Southern College. I DEVOUR books - particularly those for children and young adults. I love reading them and then sharing them with teachers and students. My interests (right this minute) are the effect of classroom libraries (and how to develop those) on reading attitudes... more »

    Hey Louanne,

    How are things?

Your session topics look very intense. I cannot wait to hear how things go. One of my students favorite topics to study in class is the Holocaust so I would love to know if you have any resource suggestions for us.

    Hola Louanne,

I am so glad to hear that your school year is going well too. It's only been a week, but I have very high hopes for my new crew.

The summer was incredible. I'm not sure if you are on facebook, but I posted a bunch of photos from both the student and teacher tours in the DR.

Thanks for the support on the book. I cannot wait to hear what you think about it. So far the reviews have been strong, but you never know.

As for IRA, I don't know too much about it. Perhaps you could fill in the blanks for me. As for Chicago, I have been itching to visit ever since I read "The Devil in the White City." So what theme/topic will you be presenting on at the conference?

    I hope all is well.

Hey Louanne! I am Amelia Spencer's sister. We were together this weekend. She told me about your kid's lit class (my all time favorite college class!) and your passion for reading. Which led to hearing about this website. Not exactly sure how to use it yet, but wanted to check out some of your favorite books. I absolutely love to read, so always up for book suggestions!

finished "Twisted" on friday. Read a little bit of "Smashed" and decided it was time today to go with my hard earned cash that I made at my garage sale I had this summer, to "Books a Million." After wandering through the store for almost an hour I picked out five books for my little sister, myself and a friend. They were out of "Cathy's Book" sadly. But, I told the lady at the cash register all about you and your passion for reading and how your sharing your passion for reading with the education department and she loved it so much she gave me her employee discount on my entire purchase.

So thanks to you I saved $6 dollars today.

    Hey Louanne,

    How are things?

Doing well here. Summer vacation is over, but it feels great to be back in the classroom again.

I recently finished "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and enjoyed it very much. Sort of a slow start, but after the first couple chapters it just took off. Phenomenal characters and now I cannot wait to read the sequel.

How is school going for you so far?

I'm on my post-summer, programming burnout vacation/break and got a chance to check in...so glad that you're enjoying the books! And many congratulations on your getting the Chair...awesome, awesome, you go girl and all that :-) I know what you're saying about After; I really appreciated her depiction of the juvie justice system (so many details spot on)...and, I think that the ending is the most difficult for a new author to really nail. I wish the editing process for YA lit was taken a little more seriously now that it's really coming into its own. Ash is next on my list for this week and now, hearing your excitement about it, I'm even more excited to read it...I think that I was the only one in my system to have ordered it; I get so many GLBT requests that I just had to give it a try. Love supporting new authors and, besides, one of these faerie tales just had to explore that direction! The description reminded me a bit of Emma Donahogue's Kissing the Witch--faerie tales that explore the "what if." Happy Reading!

Hi, we haven't chatted in a while; but, I just wanted to make sure that you weren't missing the new spate of GLBT YA fiction that has recently come out...The Vast Fields of Ordinary (awesome); Sprout; In Mike We Trust; Ash (faerie fantasy); the new Julie Ann Peters is about to come out. I'm just rattling off of the top of my head and am missing a few--if you put the first in this list into the search box, though, some of the others will appear on the search page as suggestions. Just an fyi...and, I still love your shelf :-D

    The Ancient One says

A man entered a village and went to see the Sufi Master. The visitor said "I'm deciding whether I should move here or not - and I'm wondering what the people here are like?" The Sufi Master said "Tell me, what kind of people live where you come from" The visitor said "They were robbers, cheats and liars" The Sufi Master said "You know, those are exactly the same kind of people who live here" The visitor left and never came back. Another visitor entered the village and asked the same question of the Sufi Master "I am thinking of moving here - can you tell me what the people are like?" Again the Sufi Master asked "Tell me, what kind of people live where you come from?" The visitor said "Oh, they are the kindest, gentlest, most compassionate, loving people. I shall miss them terribly" The Sufi Master said "Those are exactly the kinds of people who live here too"

Being a teacher of students you have a very broad view of people. I wish I was a teacher; it is such a noble and rich profession.
I checked your pics at Facebook.
A lovely album you put together.
Shea is your son, I think......you must be a proud mam.
