I don't really get that much into modern literature, but of the few contemporary authors I do enjoy, Stephenie Meyer and JK Rowling are among them because of their ability to integrate humor and suspense into their work. I like series books! And I love sarcasm. Twilight is way better than Harry Potter though, in my opinion.
My favorite author of all time is Agatha Christie, not only because I grew up reading her books, but because it never fails to drive me insane that I can never guess the culprit of each of her story's until the very moment of revelation. She's a genius in her ability to spin a plot.
Of the non-fiction books that I have read, "A Long Way Gone" by Ishmael Beah is one of the most powerful.
