The smell of a library or a bookstore thrills me... always seaching for other perspectives to be gained. I use reading as an escape from the daily grind and also as a reminder of how terribly blessed I am to have what I have (including the TIME to read!).

I am looking for books set in countries outside the U.S. and for social action... more »

A sometimes emotionally tough read, enlightening about the adoption process in midcentury U.S. for unwed girls and women relinquishing their babies. A little diappointed that the title seems to imply that abortion would have been an easier process for these birth mothers than giving their children up for adoption. On the contrary the loss would seem much greater had they aborted their children in my mind. In an y case it is an interesting indicator of the class system and values in mid-century America. The author is insightful and sensitive to the women she interviews.

Should be required reading especially for Westerners who turn a blind eye to the AIDS crisis in Africa

witty, caustic and confrontation- can be light reading, but if you look carefully there are serious themes that the modern reader needs to face with regard to politics and our priorities.

  • To Hell with All That: Loving and Loathing Our Inner Housewife
    • Rated 5 stars

Loving this brutally honest assessment of this and yesteryear's wife and mother- with all our quirks. Challenges me to consider whether I have fallen into society's trap of "do it all."

as a cookbook and a good read on a fascinating woman this is a book to cozy up to over tea- before dinner. The caramel cake in here is amazing.

  • The World Is Not for Sale: Farmers Against Junk Food

an interesting read from a French perspective on food, civic responsibility on a world scale, and common sense. I love the passion with which these farmers made their views known to the world in a smart and well thought out way. We have much to learn in the U.S. about agribusiness and its detrimental effects.

this is an amazing non-fiction book- it is a clear look at how drugs, poor opportunity and race conspire to keep people in ghettos- or not. Some amazing stories (true) that give you a heart for those who live in the poor areas of the city. It also calls the process of this book writing into question- one wonders about the authors- how they witnessed what they did- and maintained their innocence- or did they?

loved this young adult book- I was captured by the premise, the innocence of discovery, and the lovely discriptions of a place in time.

Ray Bradbury was a brillant man, and an adept writer. This book has shaped the way I see the world- I am much more critical of my fellow explorers in life and government...

I read these as a child- and then 2 years ago, coming with fresh eyes... I still love them. I even really enjoyed the movies too.
