“Not your typical celebrity wife book at all, but an honest, down-to-earth account of one family's struggles in the midst of tragedy--and more. I loved Mary Beth Chapman from the moment she admitted that one night early in their marriage when Steven reminded her that they shouldn't "let the sun go down upon" their wrath, she cried, "Oh yeah? Watch me!" and promptly went to sleep. As someone who survived a rocky first year of wedded bliss myself, I instantly connected with her.
Seriously though, despite the truly sad events in this account, the book is nevertheless ultimately one of triumph and encouragement. For those considering foreign adoption, it's an eye-opener. For anyone considering adoption at all, it's a great story. For any Christian struggling with their humanness, Mary Beth's account will make you realize you're in good company. There is so much here, and it is truly well-written, that I would recommend this book to just about anybody. I'd also love to sit and chat with Mary Beth and give each and every member of her family a great big, long, hug.
One of the best things about the story is what came out of it, in terms of Maria's House of Hope, (a facility for special needs orphans in China) and the ministry SHOW HOPE: A Movement to Care for Orphans, which the Chapmans founded.
In all, a very real book, honest and heart-wrenching in places, but ultimately hope-filled, and very readable.
