  • To Die For

TO DIE FOR was a pleasant surprise. It began a little slowly, (despite the prologue, a foreshadowing device) but the book grows on you, winding its fingers around your reading soul as surely as the unfolding of Anne Boleyn's life led to its inexorable end--on deep, sure-footed and inevitable tracks. The author's research and dedication make this read richly rewarding, as well as the the discovery that Anne Boleyn has often been misrepresented by history. Rather than the shrewish woman that's been portrayed (think: "Anne of the Thousand Days")we find that Mistress Boleyn was principled, religious, and more a victim than we might have thought. Her sympathies to the cause of the Reformation have certainly been overlooked by others--but not here. The saddest result I can attest to from having read this book is that my favorite doomed queen may no longer be Marie Antoinette! Additionally, the texture, details and atmosphere of Tudor England are so richly drawn that they may inspire this author (me, not Byrd) to delve into its intricate layers to find a story of my own worth telling. Need I say more? I highly recommend this book.

Pure delight, Mark Twain style. I'd forgotten how much fun Twain is, but this short story puts you right in the thick of his inimitable old-fashioned Americana. It was great fun to run across this!

This book was fast-paced fun. No huge surprises in where it ended up, but getting there was interesting and well-plotted. I was pleasantly surprised by this story and enjoyed all the characters in it. You will, too.

Well written, intriguing and fast-paced. The end might have been a little stronger with regard to the villain (who becomes more of a cut-out bad guy the more we see of him) and the heroine, who makes annoyingly obvious bad choices; but otherwise the premise is so strong that we are compelled to see what happens, and we do care about the characters. I recommend this book for sure.

Vintage, old-fashioned romance and mystery. Proof that mainstream fiction WAS Christian fiction, btw. I could niggle with the ending a little, but overall a fun read.

Well-written, fast paced page-turner. Hero is just about perfect bordering on being unbelievable, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Starts out slowly (in 19th C fashion) but once it begins to build the plot gets really fun--for awhile. The bottom line is, how far will one woman go to keep what she wants when all things point to it not being hers? The main character fails to get you rooting for her even as much as, say, a Becky Sharpe. Still, an interesting work and well worth the time; and has some first-rate supporting characters that you WILL enjoy rooting for.

Not your typical celebrity wife book at all, but an honest, down-to-earth account of one family's struggles in the midst of tragedy--and more. I loved Mary Beth Chapman from the moment she admitted that one night early in their marriage when Steven reminded her that they shouldn't "let the sun go down upon" their wrath, she cried, "Oh yeah? Watch me!" and promptly went to sleep. As someone who survived a rocky first year of wedded bliss myself, I instantly connected with her.

Seriously though, despite the truly sad events in this account, the book is nevertheless ultimately one of triumph and encouragement. For those considering foreign adoption, it's an eye-opener. For anyone considering adoption at all, it's a great story. For any Christian struggling with their humanness, Mary Beth's account will make you realize you're in good company. There is so much here, and it is truly well-written, that I would recommend this book to just about anybody. I'd also love to sit and chat with Mary Beth and give each and every member of her family a great big, long, hug.

One of the best things about the story is what came out of it, in terms of Maria's House of Hope, (a facility for special needs orphans in China) and the ministry SHOW HOPE: A Movement to Care for Orphans, which the Chapmans founded.

In all, a very real book, honest and heart-wrenching in places, but ultimately hope-filled, and very readable.
