I love historical fiction-especially the Tudor and Regency eras with a little Ancient Rome for variety. My mother is a librarian so I grew up surrounded by books and I'm usually at the library on my day off. Any historical fiction suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Expectations of Happiness

    by Rebecca Collins
    • Rated 3 stars

A sequel to Sense and Sensibility, I enjoyed it but the narrative just wasn't engaging as I'd hoped. Elinor sometimes came off as a worrier with nothing better to do. I did enjoy Margaret's storyline but wondered if society would have really let her be that free.

Good book, a little romance too-set in the time of the Huguenot persecution under Catherine de Medici.

Absolutely love the Lady Julia series and this was no exception. This follows the new couple into India where her sister Portia's friend is worried over the circumstances of her husband's death. The interaction between Julia and Brisbane as they try to figure out their new roles as husband and wife is perfect.

  • The Problem of the Surly Servant: A Charles Dodgson/Arthur Conan Doyle Mystery (Charles Dodgson/Arthur Conan Doyle Mysteries)
    • Rated 4 stars

This follows Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his wife as they try to solve a murder mystery at Cambridge. His wife, Touie, was my favorite character-she seems so down-to-earth.

At the beginning, I enjoyed each chapter but I began wanting more. Each chapter could be expanded to create a stand-alone novel. I also got tired of trying to keep each family/genealogy straight. This book just tried to do too much.

  • Becoming Marie Antoinette
    • Rated 4 stars

This followed Marie Antoinette from her childhood up to the moment she becomes Queen. It spent a lot of time in her childhood and the Austrian court so you get a real feel of the upheaval she felt being pushed onto the scene at Versailles.

I love the Poirot books and this is no exception-the twist at the end gets me every time!

This follows an English lutenist as he pursues his craft in the Danish court of King Christian IV, who is struggling with an unfaithful wife and his own eccentricities. The chapters are all from a different character's point of view and at first, you can't see how each narrative is connected but the stories slowly become intertwined as the book progresses-wonderfully written. I especially enjoyed Kirsten's chapters with her Capitalizing of Important Words.

This is the third novel by Sittenfeld that I've read and I've loved every one. Her writing style makes it so easy to identify with the characters.

  • Wickham's Diary
    • Rated 3 stars

Loved this-a behind-the-scenes look at Wickham's mind but it just ended rather abruptly. It would have been great if it had continued through his meeting with Lydia. Not sure if it was my digital copy or if it really did just stop.
