I saw the picture of the river and that you are a member of the Wendell Berry group... have you read much of Berry's writings? What is your favorite?

    The Ancient One says

    A Blessing for Happiness

May everyone be happy and safe,
and may their hearts be filled with joy.
May all living beings live in Security and in Peace--
beings who are frail or strong,
tall or short, big or small,
visible or not visible, near or far away,
already born or yet to be born.
may all of them dwell in perfect tranquility.
Let no one do harm to anyone.
Let no one put the life of anyone in danger.
Let no one, out of anger or ill will,
    wish anyone any harm.

    Metta Sutta (Stuttanipata)
    Translated by Thich Nhat Hahn.

One of the few shopping moments I let myself in for must include some bookstores, and at one point, left to myself for 10 minutes, I reached the Joyce fiction alpha and opened FW. Looking at an inventive menu. I wanted it almost as much as, at my more narcissistic moments, I crave to refashion my mirror.

But I didn't buy. Too much already in that lagoon of a mirror. What am I reading? I think there's a blog entry somewhere in the last few months, but I can't find it now -- know any librarians who need volunteer work?

I've gotten into Northrup Frye. Juicy stuff, what builds whole new ways of thinking about language without 'going French' or 'seeking the hegemony'. I've been reading Phillip Larkin's stuff (hits a chord, my dear, hits a chord -- aieee!). What else? Been milking War and Peace for two years, a chapter or two at a time. Very good reading (Rosemary Edmonds trans). Clive James Cultural Amnesia -- great essayist! Orlando Figes A People's Tragedy. A father/son dual 'interview' book The Monk and The Philosopher (Revel/Ricard)

Many 'read' books already on Goodreads. Don't have the heart to whip them onto this site -- or is there some arcane way of transfering from one site to another? Gotta be commercial jealousy there.

Hey. I'm not sure whether you wanted all this on 'public notes' here or through my website email? Thanks for being a human, and a literate one, at that!

For some reason, a friend of mine got me to spill so very many of my books onto Goodreads, that I ran out of steam when I got here. I'll tell you what. Click on my 'me' picture -- an avatar of sorts -- and that should get you to my sparse 'have read' shelf here.

Then you might try my blog -- http://trulyfool-trulyfool.blogspot.com/ -- to verify (I hope!) that I'm a person of 'similar vibe'.

We can share books thereafter if you're so inclined.

I'm looking at your shelf and seeing a chunk of my mental history. (Outside of the schools, people don't 'read good stuff' -- have you had a chance to notice yet?)

Welcome to 1001 books. You can keep track of the books you have read from the book, 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die, join in the discussions on the books we are reading for the month (BOTM) or you can debate the merits of the list as some enjoy doing. We hope you will want to join in the choosing of BOTM and the discussions. The current books are pinned to the top for that month. There are older discussions that can be found by searching discussions. If there is any way the group administrator can help further feel free to ask one of us. If you don’t own the book the list can be found at the top in the group description or at http://www.listology.com/content_show.cfm?content_id=22845. A downloadable list of the second edition is available at http://johnandsheena.co.uk/books/?page_id=160.
