Mary kept chiding me that I didn't have a picture, so I finally put one up there. That pic was taken in Feb. 2008 at the top of Mt. Bachelor in -25 (below) wind chill, so I'm trying to keep bundled! We don't get HBO so I haven't seen the John Adams series, but I'd like to read David McCullough's book on him as I enjoyed his 1776 book. Doris Kearns Goodwin is an equally good writer and hers won a Pulitzer!

" In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since.

“Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.” "
Great Gatsby opens with these two sentences.I have only read some twenty pages from the book but this advice struck me.
There is also a film adapted from the novel. In "Great Gatsby" I think the author idolized the riches and glamour of 1920's (what he calls Jazz Age), he was uncomfortable with the unrestrained materialism and lack of morality that went with it. Great Gatsby is #2 on the Modern Library's list of the 100 Best Novels of the 20th Century.
By the way Kazan was born in Turkey, but he is an Armenian. At those times, there were hundreds of Armenians living in Anatolia.

It's very nice of you to be interested in Afghanistan. There is a tragedy going on there.
Does Enrique's Journey say something about "El Paso"? It's the biggest border town between Mexico and U.S.
    Bye and best wishes.

Okay, I updated a few things on my shelf. I am reading Team of Rivals; a Pulitzer Prize winner about the Lincoln era. Fascinating so far. Sorry to hear of plumbing issues. Glad you have reconnected with your Shelfari friends!? Things are fine here...

I'm from İstanbul/Turkey, Linda.I am happy to see that some of the books I read, are in your shelf.Alon Paton's "Cry the Beloved Country",Elia Kazan's "America America" are among them. Elia Kazan was born in Anatolia,Turkey.
I'm reading "Great Gatsby" at the moment and I think you read it,too.
Have you ever heard about Nazım Hikmet? He was the most famous Turkish poet.
Here is a poem of this prominent Turkish poet :
    I read a book :
    you are in it,
    I listen to a song :
    you in it.
I sit down to eat my bread :
    you sit facing me,
    I work
    you facing me.
You who are everywhere my "ever present"
    we cannot talk together
we cannot hear each other's voice :
you are my eight years widow.

Here is another poem of Nazım :

What is she doing now, :
    right now, this instant?
Is she in the house or outside?
Is she working, lying down, or standing up?
Maybe she's just raised her arm,
    - hey,
how this suddenly bares her thick white wrist!.. -

    What is she doing now,
    right now, this instant?
    Maybe she's petting
    a kitten on her lap.
Or maybe she is walking, about to take a step,
    - those beloved feet that take her straight to me
    on my dark days!.. -
And what's she thinking about -
    me?
    Or
    - oh, I don't know -
why the beans refuse to cook?
    Or else
why most people are this unhappy?
    What is she doing now,
    right now, this instant?
    Best wishes.
