I'm too old for drugs or booze and need a constant stream of good books to keep reality at bay. Your help is appreciated.

I just ordered this and can't wait. I've read all her books and from the reviews I've read, this promises to be a good one....not that the author has written any bad ones....she just doesn't quit. I love her darkness and the fact that she once said she'd like to "strangle Agatha Christie with her own knitting, " (or words to that effect).

Read it! Hitchens is right about everything and you don't have to parse the prose to know that....we all know it on one level or another.

And I don't think his task is so gargantuan....it's very small really, and very simple. It's only that he's been kind enough to offer some explanations.

And no, we don't deserve comfort.

I love Michael Chabon.....but I'm a little disappointed in this book. The detective story doesn't seem worthy of the world he's created. Chabon's is pretty good at being hard boiled, but I just think he's a much better writer, and compared to his other books, this seems a little thin. I wanted to know more about Mendel, hear more about his Sitka.....The ending is a little messy, too.

I'm pretty sure this is nonfiction.

This is seriously my favorite book of all time, though Oprah putting it on her hit list made we waver just a little. When I was younger I thought Tolstoy was pretty close to God to understand humans so completely... I've never read anything that came close to describing characters...."describing" is a poor word: "scultping" is more apt.

Oh, and I finally made it to Russia too...and took the train from Petersburg to Moscow. I was hysterical for the entire ride.

it stinks. it's like she wrote down every bit of cleverness that happened her way for a few years until she had some vacation time, when, she smashed them all together into a book. Exhausting.
