I'm too old for drugs or booze and need a constant stream of good books to keep reality at bay. Your help is appreciated.

    Hi!

The Minneapolis-St.Paul-Minnesota Group recently hit 100 members, so we're kicking off a 100-Member Celebration! Details are available on the group site. Hint: It involves a drawing for some gift certificates, and participation is required in order to be eligible for the drawing :-) Come celebrate with us!

Also, we've announced that our summer group read will be Leif Enger's newest book: So Brave, Young and Handsome. I'm reading this book right now and will have the discussion thread up by next week. The thread will be available for discussion this entire summer.

    Hi!

If you are receiving this note, then you are a member of the Minneapolis-St.Paul-Minnesota Group. I just wanted to let our group members know that the discussion thread for the April/May 2009 Group Read – Growing An Inch by Stanley Gordon West – has been posted. I just finished this book myself. I enjoyed it thoroughly and am looking forward to the group discussion.

Also, we are currently voting for our next group read – which will be for the June-July-August timeframe. Please stop by and vote for your preferred books for the group read by Saturday, April 25.

P.S. I see that one of your favorites is The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. I read this book last year and have to admit that at the time I didn't appreciate it that much. The problem is that I was looking for a plot, and Lonely Hunter is really a character study. But since that time I have grown to appreciate the book more and would like to re-read it someday.

Hey there "limpet"...apologies for being such an arse in not replying for a whole year :( What is more outrageous is that I have been regularly smirking to myself over your comment below over the past year...but have been too lazy etc. to even acknowledge it.

Well anyway, I have emerged from my academic chrysalis and turned in to a rather feeble, damp-winged valuation moth...but at least I don't have to take my work home anymore :) It also gives me more time to indulge in my ham radio hobby too :)

Ah, now that I read it again I totally get what you meant! You might also try some Elizabeth von Arnim -- Enchanted April in particular was really good. Not exactly the same as Pym, but I think you'd enjoy it.

    Dear Miss Limpet,

I have received your distress signal and alerted his Lordship. He has examined your shelf approvingly, and notes you and he have friends in common. He begs to inquire whether or not you solemnly swear not to be a Lurker, and wonders what ridiculously British alias you'd care to go by at Anglophiles Anonymous. If stumped, you may wish to avail yourself of the following page, which was created by one of our members: http://namegen.synthasite.com/

Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont is by Elizabeth Taylor, though, not Barbara Pym. Still, I know what you mean about Pym -- it's a pity she wrote so few books. I like many of the authors reprinted by Virago Modern Press -- also Rosalind Lehmann, Rose Macauley, etc. Do you also like Elizabeth Bowen?
I'm in Golden Valley, so not too far away (though it sometimes feels like it!). I'm 46, so I know what you mean about needing the books -- more than one drink and I'm asleep! What kind of work do you do?

I've no idea when you joined the Molly Keane group, but welcome aboard. I do recall running across you once in the comments on To Kill a Mockingbird early last year. Someone had written something unbelievably stupid about it, and you asked them if they breathed through the mouth all the time. Loved it! Anyway, welcome aboard, and I hope you will feel free to start discussion threads, rally the troops, and so on.
    cheers,

I enjoyed looking at your book shelf - it was familiar since I have many of the same ones. My favorite LOL book is Bryson's A Walk in the Woods. I just finished Ruth Reichl's Garlic and Sapphires. Amuxing. Not amusing but thought-provoking is The shape of Things to Come: Prophecy and the American Voice by Greil Marcus. I'm only about a third of the way through it. I'll be ready for another good laugh once I finish it!

What did you think of God is Not Great? I considered reading it, but I worry it's too one way, and every time I've seen Hitchens on TV or anywhere else, he ain't nothin' but a jerk.

I have just joined Shelfari! I am always looking for a new friend who loves books! My name is Larry Montello, and I live in Marshall, Minnesota. I just moved back here about ten months ago from Arizona! I was born in Montclair, New Jersey. My ethnic heritage is Italian, Scot, Irish, German, Canadian, and God knows what else. I have eight children, all from my marriage to Dawn, that ended over six years ago. Only three of my children live in Minnesota at the present time, (a couple of hours away from here),, but I talk to all of them frequently on the phone and they often visit. In my life I have lived in 14 different US states and traveled in 48. I have also traveled quite a lot in Canada, and some in Mexico. No where else YET! In the past I have been, among other things, a school teacher, small business owner, manager, waiter, hospital technician, salesman, and delivery driver. Now I have an overnight job at Walmart, but who knows how long that will last! I have always been a inquisitive and curious person, which explains my university degrees. They are in geography, history, political science and English Literature. I primarily went to universities to LEARN things not just to pursue career or financial goals. Oh well! Probably does not make much sense to a lot of people. I have a wide variety of interests and hobbies. Among my interests are: history, geography, cultures, music, literature, art, science, railroads, nature and wildlife. Among my hobbies are: reading, listening to music, watching movies, taking care of my pets, collecting stamps, postcards, books, sports memorabilia, and maps. I love animals and have quite a number, including: a dog, (Jack), two cats,(Lilly and Siggy), three cockateils, a tortoises, and eight water turtles. Hopefully your new friend, Larry

    Hi 55~
I was momentarily afraid that you had fallen off the wagon as far as adding books to your shelves, but it just ain't true of course. I am back in Alaska now and loving it, though it's raining some.
    Take care.
