Hello everyone

I have loved reading since childhood. I am a mom of four who usually doesn't have much time to read, but when I find a good book, forget housework! I also enjoy listening to audiobooks. I listen in the car with my children, only when the book is suitable for children, or at work. I have a very repetitve night job. ... more »

I really liked it. Hard to put down. Enjoyed the background of a time i don't know much about. The book brought it to life on a more personal level.

You have to be committed to giving this book a couple of chapters to warm up and it's difficult to imagine being the kind of wife you'll find in Poisonwood Bible, but once you get into it, you won't want to put it down.

You asked about the Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Society. I agree with what Patty F says in her note below. Some portions of the book that described WWII were difficult to read but overall the book was a joy to read and I was not ready for it to end (although I liked the ending). This book is a favorite of mine and I hope you will also enjoy it.

I tried to write you a note about the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and I screwed up. You definitely should listen to this book. It is a wonderful audio book. Here is my review:

It took me one night to read this book. I have been floundering lately with what I have been reading but this book was marvelous. I can now understand why so many people love this book.

Juliet Ashton has made a name for herself as a writer during World War II. Many people found her newspaper columns funny and inspiring. Now the war is over and she is trying to figure out what to write next.

She receives a letter from a member of a strange book club that meets on the island of Guernsey. Thus begins a most wonderful friendship. This story is told by letters to and from Juliet, her friends in England and Scotland and her new friends on Guernsey. I learned a lot about the war in Britain, but more importantly the story feels true. Like much of the best fiction, the characters became part of my life.

Because one of my book groups is going to discuss this in June; I just listened to the audio version. This would be a great book for someone who wants to try listening to a book. There are several narrators and they give wonderful readings. Now I have voices to go with my picture of Juliet and Dalsey.

About The Hiding Place: I liked it but I had a hard time accepting the constant good attitudes of the women in it. I like to know that someone at least struggled with negative feelings but then overcame them. It was almost as if she was tooting her own horn. At least that's what I remember--I actually read this about five years ago. I have not heard of Elsewhere.
You have a great selection of books. I've gotten some good ideas for new books to read.

I haven't read Year of Wonders or March, but thanks for the reccommendation. I will put them on my wish list. I just finished The Thirteenth Tale today. I enjoyed it. It was like a modern Jane Eyre, with big houses and crazy people and family secrets. I got my history degree ten years ago, as well. I love fiction, but the books that really stick with me, like the Martha Ballard book, are often non-fiction. I guess that's the historian in me.
