"If I am not better, at least I am different." -John Jacques Rousseau

I'm a librarian at a community college that just recently added a high school program. I now work with teenagers from age 13/14 on up to adults of all ages. I have a lot of children's literature on my shelf for a number of reasons though. The first being that those... more »

I'm not sure how many recipes I will make out of this book, but it is a delightful read.

    The Santaland Diaries

Each story in this collection got progressively less funny. I realize that it is satire, but honestly, he should stick with telling stories about his life and family.

    Otis Spofford

It's always fun to read a book from the point of view of a minor character from another book. The combination of this book and Ellen Tebbits really shows Cleary's range as an author. You are squarely behind each title character when reading their book, but while reading Otis's you see what a goody two shoes Ellen can be, and while reading Ellen's you see how obnoxious he can be. To be fair, he is a tad obnoxious in his book too.

  • Arsene Lupin, Gentleman-Thief (Penguin Classics)
    • Rated 4 stars

This is a collection of the cream of the crop of Arsene Lupin stories, and they are quite entertaining. However, since it is only a sampling, there are cases and people alluded to that do not appear in this book. That, combined with the fact that the editor chose both very early stories and later stories where he has transitioned into a crime solver, it left me feeling a little lost. You don't get to see him evolve from criminal to detective, he just suddenly has become one. Over all though, they were very entertaining.

A delightful and captivating read. Of course, if you don't enjoy food (including meat), France, or Christmas this is not the book for you. Otherwise, I highly recommend it.

A great mystery, with fun characters, filled with all sorts of historical detail. Right up my alley since I love cozy mysteries and am a huge Anglophile. It was a perhaps a little too cerebral at times in that author has the hero figure things out without disclosing all of the clues to the reader, but overall, very nicely done. I'm delighted that the second and third books are already out. One caveat though, reading this book will make you want to partake in the ritual of afternoon tea in a most intense way.

A sweet book, although not nearly as good as the first two Grandma Dowdel books.

I was pleasantly surprised that this won the Newbery Medal as it strikes me as geared towards a much more mature audience then those books typically are. Scary, but not horrifying, fun characters, and Gaiman's wonderful knack for creating a varied and rich fantasy world. I also appreciated how he left the book open for a possible sequel yet didn't leave significant questions unanswered. Well done.

This book grabbed my interest right from page one. There were a few plot points that were obvious to me, and a little too much scholar speak, but all in in all a really good read.
