"If I am not better, at least I am different." -John Jacques Rousseau
I'm a librarian at a community college that just recently added a high school program. I now work with teenagers from age 13/14 on up to adults of all ages. I have a lot of children's literature on my shelf for a number of reasons though. The first being that those were the books I read when I had the most free time for reading. I also took both a children's literature course and a young adult literature course while completing my master's degree. I have a personal goal to read a high percentage of the Newbery award winners and honor books. Finally, a great number of the fiction books geared towards adults hinge on tragic or hideous plot points: rape, murder, terminal illness, abuse, divorce, children with problems etc., whereas not so much with children's literature. You get enough of that on the news, I don't really want to curl up with it.
I also enjoy non-fiction books that read like novels, biographies, historical fiction, mysteries, and a little chick lit. Not such a big fan of that though. I've recently discovered the Alex Awards and realized that I had already read a large number of those books which is fun. I now have a really good guide to adult books each year.
I don't have a problem with not finishing a book if I don't enjoy it. Life is too short, and no one is giving out a "martyred reader" award. If I don't finish a book I still try and write a review if I have read a considerable portion of it.
Above all, I want a strong thread of humor in my books.
I'm a bit of a smart ass, very opinionated, and with an eclectic taste in most everything, especially when it comes to books. I try not to say anything if I can't add something substantial to the discourse. My reading now list is my short plan to read list since the current plan to read list is so huge and getting bigger every week.
