"If I am not better, at least I am different." -John Jacques Rousseau

I'm a librarian at a community college that just recently added a high school program. I now work with teenagers from age 13/14 on up to adults of all ages. I have a lot of children's literature on my shelf for a number of reasons though. The first being that those... more »

Well Shelby is right up the road from Charlotte! Actually Mint Hill is suburban Charlotte. I have lots of YA books on my shelf too even though I left off hundreds of them. My shelf is too cumbersome as it is but that's what happens when you read for years and years. I started keeping a list in '84 because so many faculty members asked about something good to read and I couldn't remember what I did yesterday. It came in handy for Shelfari. What is the statue on your page? I feel as though I should know it.

Hi, enjoyed perusing your shelves and reading your reviews. Where do you live in NC? I'm old so have lots of titles on my shelf...maybe some you haven't read. I got a few good ideas from you!

Thanks for your note! I was not trying to be sarcastic to the other poster but hello?
You have great kid's book pics. A couple of my faves: "If You Give a Pig a Pancake" (explores ADD and OCD)
And "From The Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil. E. Frankweiler" - kids living on their own in a museum.

Hey! I've been good. Texas is like living on Mercury, but it's not that bad otherwise. I hope you'll note that I've been reviewing it up.

I was looking over some reviews of Fried Green Tomatoes and came across yours. Of course your name was intriging since I am also a librarian. I began to wonder if you'd read Cold Sassy Tree so I looked you up. There it was on the shelf with the others we have in common. You said you like humor but you don't have The Spellman Files and do have Evanovich so I thought I'd recommend that you check out the reviews and comments on The Spellman Files and its sequel. You might like them.

This site gets more aggravating instead of better, I can't seem to read reviews. Anyway I see your reading Shadow of the Wind, it's one of my all time favorites. Not to put any pressure on the story, but it's just a wonderfully crafted gothic tale. I hope you enjoy it.

Two more reviews! I'll admit it's a lot of fun. Especially when the review is snarky. Heh.

Thanks! Maybe I will, I do enjoy it. I used to be pretty fanatical about posting reviews on Amazon for a while, but I fell out of it.

Ahem, no getting uppity, we are now tied. And of course, I am reading serious works of history while you traffic in frivolous fiction. So ha.

Absolutely. Nabokov is an amazing writer, and [em]Lolita[/em] is probably his masterpiece. ([em]Pale Fire[/em] is a little bit "experimental" for my tastes.) Humbert Humbert is distasteful, of course, but a distasteful character (or even subject matter) is not enough to make the book less than great. He's not even the most distasteful character in great fiction. Rabbit, from John Updike's quartet of novels, is arguably worse. There's a whole pantheon of terrible people in [em]Gravity's Rainbow[/em]. The Judge from [em]Blood Meridian[/em] is the villain, of course, but he's also far worse than Humbert Humbert.

It's an unpleasant but good novel.

Wow - a Newbery Top 10 list. That's a toughie! Ask me again tommorrow, and the list may be different, but for today any, here's my list (in no particular order):
    "Hittie, her First Hundred Years"
    "Roller Skates"
    "Caddie Woodlawn"
    "Johnny Tremain"
    "The Dark Frigate"
    "The Trumpeter of Krakow"
"The Cat Who Went to Heaven"
    "Walk Two Moons"
    "Bridge to Terebithia"
    "Maniac Magee"
