“I started reading this to prepare for my "visit" with William Shatner at Dallas Comic Con. It is a bit of a dull read, sadly, but there are a few interesting tidbits. Roddenberry decided to work on science fiction after a racially charged episode,of a another show he was working on was not aired. He realized that in order to say anything substantive of TV, he would need to work in a "more acceptable" framework. When the NBC executives first saw the Star Trek pilot, they were impressed, "but they felt that the American public was too lazy, too complacent and just to dumb to appreciate such tales." and in regards to that interracial kiss, what we see on TV isn't really a kiss. They had to shoot the scene twice. In one, Kirk plants one on Uhura. In the second take, he turns and give the illusion of kissing. The no-contact kiss made the cut. Unless you love the Kirk, I wouldn't necessarily recommend reading the book, but I enjoyed it under my unusual circumstances.”
