I do love a good book, but it seems all manner of internet content is stealing me away from books lately. I would love to set a goal for 2009 to read all the books on my TBR shelf. Some of those have been in the queue for a loooong time so guess we'll see what happens. I would like to clear out the clutter if nothing else and when Nancy Pearl... more »

The Spellmans put the fun in dysfunctional. I'd really love to know these people.

I'm always interested in books featuring Japanese internment. This one was notable for its clash of cultures, particularly between the Chinese and Japanese of Seattle during that time. I didn't care much about the prickly modern day father/son relationship; the flashbacks were the best part of the book.

Intriguing idea to sell one's house and donate half the proceeds, but in the end it wasn't really all that compelling.

One wild night in Manhattan with all the intensity that teens bring to their relationships and heartbreaks. Definitely PG-13 for a near sexual encounter (hilariously interrupted) and multiple references to sexuality.

I highly recommend anyone with a high school student read this! A quick, useful book that will allay some fears and give you and your child confidence that they will find their college home. Despite discouraging news from a few elite universities, there are many fine schools out there vying for your attention. The author, a former university president, addresses standardized testing, financial aid considerations, college visits, and the psychology of marketing. One interesting thing I learned was that fifty percent of students don't finish college and most of those will leave school after the first year. Knowing a school's retention rate and inquiring as to why they believe they are better or worse at retention is an important bit of information to have when deciding on a school.

Very funny story featuring a family of private detectives that can't stop surveilling each other, woven with fast-paced assignments and just enough edginess to make you wonder where it is going. Everyone has a secret.

A short downer of a story. I want to like this author but each time I finish one of her books I feel a little hung over. An English country woman has decided that she has lived long enough and plans her suicide, but when she crosses paths with a wanted murderer her plans change. She learns quite a bit about her dead husband, ponders her relationship with her children, and seems to connect with this new person in her life and house. A bit edgy, a bit philosophical.

Thought-provoking and a great primer on the difficulties immigrants face in this country. Imagine being a person who has never seen STEPS before, now trying to navigate city life.

Fun snapshot of a different era when two college girls from Iowa could spend a summer in New York supporting themselves with temporary jobs at Tiffany.
