“If you loved the Bristol-set TV series Skins, you’ll appreciate Apples by Richard Milward. The book is narrated by different characters, but most of them are by an extrovert “loser” Adam and the stunning and reckless Eve. “Scenes [of shocking violence, alcohol and drug-intake, sex and hookups] are carried off with such impulsivity and so little emotional connection or gravity, that it is hard to take them seriously or perceive them as grounded in the plot (Bookslut review)”. “Accusations of immorality may be targeted at it, but what it conveys so compellingly is the amorality of adolescence, the lawlessness-cum-schizophrenia that allows one to be half-naive, half-knowing, sensitive and callous, endearing and repulsive all at the same time (The Times UK)”.”
