hi swede, the best things i've read lately are The Book Of Flying by Keith Miller and Troll: a love Story by Johanna Sinisalo. Those books were knock outs and very different. i've read other good books but they were kind of girlish as some of alice hoffman's can be, but not all. i understand her newest one is really good as was Skylight Confessions. Bankok 8 by John Bendet is really good but i think his main character is perhaps more evolved than the writer himself. if your interested in the bankok culture and a good detective mystery, you'll enjoy that one. looking forward to the larsson.

hi swede, how are you? you have been in my thoughts over the summer. The Girl With The DragonTattoo is finally out but back ordered, but will get my copy soon and also gearing up to read Norwegien Wood. since you like americana and good writing, i think you would enjoy Blackbird House by Alice hoffman. its a quick and enjoyable read. actually i've read several good things this summer.

Got your note. It sounds like an interesting book. I started reading A New Earth. Then I found London by Rutherfurd at the Good Will Store. I've been writing lately more than I have been reading.

    Hi Swede,

I just read a really good Cold War novel called STRAY DOG WINTER, which comes out in October. It's about a young gay Australian who goes to Moscow in 1984 for a painting exhibition and gets entrapped in a KGB plot. The prose is excellent, and the mood of that era is captured superbly. Really gripping. The author's name is David Francis -- an Australian who lives in Los Angeles.

Next up I want to read David Benioff's CITY OF THIEVES.

    And you?

I haven't read it yet. I really want to, but I couldn't get the book out of the library. I heard that Oates was good from a friend and the story of the new book sounds good. Is she a good author?

Hi - I'll add your recommendation to my list of "shoulds" for the future. Unfortunately (or not), books/reading is my vice. I inherited quite a collection from my brother and father and even if I quit working and read full time, I'm not sure I could get through everthing. I still get caught up in all the new stuff coming up as well. I am hoping for a "reading vacation" this summer -- a little spot in the mountains or at the beach where I can just read all day. Have a good one!

    Hi--

I've heard all about THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. It comes out here in the fall; I can't wait to read it.

I'm just finishing AMERICAN WIFE by Curtis Sittenfeld. It's very rich and moving. It's inspired by the life of Laura Bush. Fascinating.

    Enjoy--

    Hi Swede--

I see you read Joyce Carol Oates's THE FALLS. She's a brilliant writer. I recommend her new novel, MY SISTER, MY LOVE.

    Hi Swede,
How are you doing? I see you've read A YEAR IN PROVENCE. How I would like to spend a year there!! I haven't read the book but I have the series based on it on DVD. It's quite amusing. Have you read any of Frances Mayes' books on Tuscany? I loved them but I don't think the Tuscans appreciate how popular they're countryside has now become with the tourists.

Here's a question for you: Do you usually purchase the books you read, get them from the library, or borrow them from a friend?

    Peace,
    Sharon

hi swede, i've been checking on you!! you've been away for a while. tell me about your mood. you know spring has sprung here. the daffodils are out and the trees are blooming and then we have this snow coming in tonight. this weather probably happens in sweden all the time but no very often here. also, tell me about lost in the forest. i've been reading price of water in f. and the author reminds me of me a bit well mostly in temperment though i don't go poisoning things.
