I am a teacher of ESL & French and live in NJ. I teach at the middle school level and sometimes teach adult literacy courses as well. I am married and have two children.
As for hobbies, I enjoy film, music, reading and creating digital media with my MacBook. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of free time to pursue these hobbies, but I enjoy them while I can.
Music has always been an important part of my life. Discovering the music of the Clash, Patti Smith and Bob Marley was life changing. Used to be the reggae DJ at an Asbury Park club when I was in college.
Favorite music: eclectic . . . Gainsbourg, Leonard Cohen, Bob Marley, Belle & Sebastian, RATM, old school punk & reggae, world music, old time Cuban Buena Vista Social Club stuff. Since traveling to the DR 6 times or more, bachata and merengue now hold a special place in my heart. Hearing those sounds bring back great memories and make me think about when I will finally return to the island.
My daughter just turned 13 and got her first electric guitar. She is starting to get into music and I am having a lot of fun sharing my favorites with her. She loves Sonic Youth, Gogol Bordello and the Velvet Underground. We are hoping to see a few concerts together this summer
Favorite Films: eclectic. . . Maybe my favorite film over the past few months has been "Into the WIld". I loved the scene where Alex sent his college savings to Oxfam and then burned all of his money and IDs.
I really enjoy documentaries. Recently viewed Harvest of Shame (US migrant workers 1960) , Salud! ( on Cuban health care) and Scandalize My Name (McCarthy Era) . RECOMMENDED for trip participants: LIFE & DEBT (Stephanie Black's film on Globalization and how it changed Jamaica.
Also enjoy international films, off the top of my head. . . Sugar Cane Alley, Almodovar, Godard, films like "Tsotsi" , "Babel" , "City of God", "Battle of Algiers", "La Haine" , "Fanny & Alexander".
My shelf on this site doesn't display all of my books; I have chosen only books that have been important to me during various stages of my life, as well as a few that I am interested in at the moment.
My project for the summer is organizing a Social Justice tour of the Dominican Republic and the Haitian border. The trip will bring together over a dozen socially conscious teachers from across the USA. We will visit Haitian migrant workers, Dominican coffee farmers, sweatshops, an orphanage for children with HIV/Aids, Peace Corps volunteers and other interesting people and places.
