Set over a 24-hr period, Run is the story of a widowed Boston politician, his two adopted sons, and a car accident that brings them into the lives of his sons' sister and mother. This all-in-one-day story needed a tighter rope to make it work for me. The conversation between the two Tennessees was confusing initially. A second reading of it made it the one bright spot in the book.

Too much was made of the statue, for nothing in the end. And book clubs will go on and on about the title: who was running, from and for what and whom.

Did this feel like a screenplay to anyone else?

Flashes of the old Pat Conroy, a few comic scenes, but very uneven overall. South of Broad was not of the caliber of his earlier work. I likedhis characters. The story just didn't hang together.

Cute premise; halfway through I became annoyed with Meg's inability to say 'NO' to her irritating family. Soldiered through to the end--found myself editing it, however, punching up the language.

Junor presented a fascinating, inside look at what the members of Britain's royal family do to earn their living; most of the book centers on Prince Charles, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. I found the book to be one-sided and sympathetic toward the Royals, written in response to tell-all books and/or scandals. And, because I'm not British nor a Royals-follower, some of the references to British aristocrats, their parliamentary system, their media talent, etc., flew over my head.

Reliance on one dimensional characters, a helpless main character and cliches move this book along. Everyone deserves what they get, except Abby DiMatteo--how did she ever graduate from medical school with her lack of initiative?

If you're not familiar with England, other than the Royals, Lyall's book is a great introduction. Lyall's bright, humorous writing style will keep you interested. Otherwise, if you are over thirty and have done any reading about this sceptered isle, some of the chapters will drag.

Most of the book verified what I had already heard about Miss Lee, or had figured out. The last two chapters were the best, as they sum up, as best the author can without daily contact with the writer, a reclusive, one-book author's life.
