I was searching for books to read in shelfari and came across "Before you say I Do: things you should know". I knew the author is a pastor so I'm not sure if this book would be useful for non-Christian people as well. Do you recommend this book? Did it add anything to you? Thanks
I've taught this book to AP Seniors in HS who love it.... We view it as the hero's journey towards self-awareness with all its bells and whistles.... initial dissatisfaction, call to action, supernatural aid, tests and obstacles and final flight. Read the story "People Can Fly" which introduces the legend of the flight myth in the slave world as a symbolic basis. I've read it at least ten times and find more each time.
No worries about the delayed response. Sometimes it takes me awhile, too. Anyway, I hope you know how wonderful a friend you have there, because that little book has been out of print for so long, was the one Butler claims to have regretted publishing and would never see in print again, and is sold online for an arm and a leg! Don't give it away... ever, or if you decide to cull, think of me. LOL
Hi Kyle, Song of Solomon is a difficult text to tackle. As an educator, I would suggest you choose another book for your audience. However, I would begin instruction on the book with a lesson on symbolism. After reading the first chapter, I'd ask you to have students quote images that resonate with them.
Song of Solomon-Things I remember best-- Pilate's lack of a belly button as a physical manifestation of how unnatural she is. Also, a man's name, and not a popular man. Then there's the theme of flying and what it stands for (freedom, faith...)Also the theme of Us verus Them-- mistrust of anything 'other.'
Hi, I noticed that you have Octavia Butler's Survivor on your shelf. How did you manage to get a copy?!
