“An amazingly powerful and shocking book. I was skeptical to read this, knowing it was a post-apocalyptic book. I thought "cue Michael Bay for a movie rendition of this one." But it is the furthest from such Hollywood drivel that a book could possibly be.
I know every generation thinks it's the one that will finally wipe out life in general or bring about the en of the world, but I really like Shute's take: it's not life ending, just human life, and people just go on being people until the end. I liked Peter Holmes's quote, "Maybe we've been too silly to deserve a world like this." Overall very thought-provoking. I found myself reacting to this book the same way I did when I first saw "Titanic" as a 10 year old: it wasn't the horror of the boat sinking or the atomic bombs that was terrifying, it was the fate of the people left in water and post-fallout that was.”
