I taught elementary school for 32 years, mostly second grade. Now, I tutor children at my former school, am an advisory teacher for a home schooling program, and I volunteer as a homework tutor at a homeless shelter.
My passions are working with children, reading, bike riding, and doing needlework. When the weather gets better here in MD, my husband and I plan on hiking with friends. This will be a new experience that we are looking forward to.
When I taught full time, I got much joy in sharing books with my students especially when I saw them grow in their own excitement of reading and personal journeys through books.
"...live on the shimmering line between your old thinking and your new understanding, always in a state of learning."
from Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
"Life is the classroom. Love is the lesson."
(I saw this on a bumper sticker.)
"The more I read, the more I know,
The more I know, the smarter I grow,
The smarter I grow, the stronger my voice,
when speaking my mind or making a choice."
(anonymous quote on bookmarks distributed by school librarian)
"'If people were Superior to Animals, they'd take better care of the world.' said Pooh."
from Winnie-the-Pooh by A. A. Millne
"The great leaders of humanity have a lot of personal power because they have great faith. But their faith comes from the heart, not the head. Their faith comes from love instead of fear, and from wisdom instead of knowledge. The kind of faith that comes from the head is blind faith because it comes from knowledge, from false beliefs, from fear. Blind faith is a faith that leads to frustration and dogmatism, which explains all the religious wars, all the fear that other people don't believe what we believe. Blind faith is a faith that we have to defend and impose on other people in order to feel validated and safe."
from The Four Agreements Companion Book by Don Miguel Ruiz
"Human beings are more alike than unalike, and what is true anywhere is true everywhere, yet I encourage travel to as many destinations as possible for the sake of education as well as pleasure."
by Maya Angelou
