Awesome! Good recommendation-- I'll have to seek it out... I HATE when books go out of print-- turns me into a serious hoarder of old books, once I find them. I'll put it on my list-- thank you!

BTW-- I am in education, also, working as an OT in the elementary & middle school environment... Some teachers that I work with make me wonder why they didn't just go into banking or something-- they seem completely bored & burned out, even after just a couple years of teaching. But then, some of the teachers I work with are amazing, and clearly have a 'calling' to their profession; from your description of yourself, it seems likely that you're one of these! Kudos for keeping your enthusiasm, during all that time working with kids... Good teachers rock!

Sorry I have been sick the past week with a bad cold and just have slept my week away. I like Home safe but agree not one of her best though I did enjoy the mother daughter relationship. Yes your receommendations were helpful.

    Hi Karen,

Just read your thing about teaching and salaries.

The same week I was offered my library job (graduate degree and 9 extra credits) I was offered a job at the phone company (not even G.E.D required, just passing a test).

I decided to take the library job, even though it paid half what the phone company paid. I still have not equalled that pay, 12 years later.

BTW I very much enjoy reading your posts on WS!

    Hey Karen,

    How goes it?

Just started school this week and the body is exhausted but the mind is racing – overall it feels terrific to be back in the classroom.

This summer my latest book was released – “Roam Italy: A Teacher and His Students Take the Ultimate Class Trip.” The book’s website is www.theclassroombook.com if you wanted to check things out.

Possible tornado warnings in NJ this weekend so I best head for cover…

I see you read Snowflower and Secret Fan I read that and enjoyed it. It was a bit slow in the begining but then it just flew by. I really loved how things are never what they seem at first glance. And the layers of perception and truths.

Because you are looking for people to agree with you not people who have a mind of their own. Teachers are usually like this. Too much time in the classroom and not enough time growing with other adults perhaps.

Karen, I can tell you are an elementary teacher, because you treat others as if they are children. You don't have the right to tell anyone how they formulate their opinions, how we are to be, etc. I did not ask you for your opinon. Stay off my site!

First and foremost, HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY FRIEND!!!! I am so happy that our paths crossed on this journey called life. I wish you every good thing starting with a great day!

Back to The Shack. . .
"A black woman" you say? Mr. Young didn't just pick any black woman as his personification of God. IF he had picked a professional, well spoken, feminist black woman, then that might have been revolutionary.

    But No!

He picked a fat-bare-foot-in- the-kitchen-rag-on-her-head-wearing-can’t-conjugate the verb “to be” talkin’-MAMMY!!! "That's just how I is"????? WTF! I can't imagine how this racist stereotype can be anything but insulting to any intelligent black person reading the book.

On the other hand, I read your comments about this book be a place for some who are just beginning to doubt and think outside of the dogma box. I hadn’t thought about that angle. Still I think that even beginner questioners who are also black would be uncomfortable with the Aunt Jemima character.

From where I sit, the story sounded like the same ole thing. . .blood sacrifice required scapegoat made to suffer for the evil innate in human kind. . .one, and only one way back to God. . .heavy handed proselytizing YUCK!!

    Hey Karen,
I hated the The Shack! I though it was childish and condescending. I highly offended by God as Aunt Jemima ! "That's jus how I is"????!!! WTF??

There was nothing inspiring or insightful in the book. Every time the protagonist's (forgot his name) head tunred to "mush" I felt insulted.

I think it is really sad that a book like this is getting the attention and the praise this book is getting. To quote She, "It's like a vacuum out there..."!
