Quite the epic space opera. Brutally violent, suprisingly funny, and completely imaginative, reading this is like a gritty reaction to Star Wars (it was first published recently after the original trilogy ended). It's easily one of the best space opera's I've ever read.

An amusing, breezy book. The only drawback I can think of is that it never really seems like the protagonists are in any danger of overcoming their obstacles. That said, the book was fun enough that I was just interested in seeing what happened next, even though I pretty much knew the outcome.

I haven't read any Hiassen before, but I'd like to check out some of his other, more adult novels.

I know it's a literary and genre classic, and I found it an interesting read, but at the same time, I felt like I was missing something.

  • John Constantine Hellblazer: Stations of the Cross (Hellblazer (Graphic Novels))

I'm a BIG fan of Mike Carey's run on Hellblazer thus far, but this one sadly missed a lot of the mark and felt like a lot of set-up. Mostly, it's Constantine trying to regain his memories and all the demons and monsters he's screwed (mostly metaphorically) have hopes of taking advantage of the situation. Unfortunately, because of its amnesiac state, Constantine feels pretty lacking, and doesn't really come back to himself until the end. Out of the Carey run I've so far read, this is easily my least favorite.

Hardboiled, cyberpunk, pulpy goodness filled with stunning imagery. There's not a story in here that isn't a delight.

Easily Cory Doctorow's most exciting book, and possibly the most important one he's written. A mirror-image of where America could be going with things like the Patriot Act and Homeland Security, and a simple cry to arms of how to change it.

A fantastic collection of dark SF stories, some of them unsettling, some of them just plain heartbreaking, all very good reads. Highlights for me were "The Last Stand of the Elephant Man," a story where Joseph Merrick is catapulted to the future, given a different body, and watches society turn his deformities into a trend. "Captive Girl" is another favorite, possibly one of the most disturbing love stories I've ever read. "For the Plague Thereof was Exceeding Great," "Immortal Sin," and "Big Sister/Little Sister" are just great, dark, gut-wrenching reads. Highly recommended if you like your SF/F dark.

  • Mike Mignola's B.P.R.D.: Hollow Earth & Other Stories
    • Rated 4 stars

This was a lot more fun than I expected it to be, and a lot more mysterious and surreal. I wasn't sure if I'd like this book without Hellboy, and especially without Mignola's art. But the story and characters are wicked fun, and Guy Davis' art works really well. It's the first BPRD book I've picked up, but I'll definitely be checking out more.

Not my favorite of the Fable series (I still think March of the Wooden Soldiers was a high point), and despite the beginning, things get interesting with Boy Blue's adventures in the Homelands, even though the Reveal of the Adversary was pretty obvious a couple of volumes ago.

An incredibly dark, angsty YA book about fairies, trolls, drugs, sex, estranged parents, glass swords -- you know, pretty much everything most kids have to deal with. It's the first book of Holly Black's that I've read, but I'm really looking forward to reading more of her stuff. The last 50 pages or so were unrelenting page-turners with a climax that is as kick-ass as the protagonist who brings us there.
