Once upon a time I'd read every book Palahniuk had written. At some point, I started to feel like they were all about the same character, so I stopped reading for a while.

This collection of essays is something special, though, and easily my favorite book of his since Fight Club. He shines a big spotlight on people and eccentricities and where we are today.

It makes me want to go back and check out some of the stuff I've missed. If you dig Chuck, definitely do not miss this book.

A vampire noir with mafia style clans and zombies, this is easily the coolest vampire book I've read in a long time.

I'm really looking forward to reading more of these.

Some of the most chilling little horror stories I've read in a long time, and also some of the most heartfelt. If you like smart horror, this is definitely for you.

Neil Gaiman delivers another lovely story, this one something of a coming of age book. Growing up with dead people has never been so much fun.

    X-men: Deadly Genesis (X-Men)

This is a review of X-Men: Deadly Genesis. I'm not sure why it also ties X-Men: Messiah Complex together with this...

I wanted to like this, I really did. And it was pretty okay, considering it was one of the biggest, weirdest retcons ever -- all done to cast a sinister light on Professor X. It's not quite Brand New Day bad, Bru's got way better chops than that, but in the end, it left a very bad taste in my mouth, and I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending it to friends.

Wow. It's obviously been a while since I read the X-Men.

That's not true, completely. I've read the Joss Whedon series, which was fun. I loved Grant Morrison's New X-Men arc. This book, Mike Carey of Hellblazer fame is onboard as the writer and Chris Bachallo provides the art. Carey's got a good sense of pace and character, and Bachalo's artwork, as always, is amazing.

This book doesn't hold up as well for me as those two did, but it was certainly fun to read. What's good about it is that it takes some of the X-Men that I don't consider A-listers anymore including Rogue, Cable, Cannonball, and Iceman, and lumps them together with some new blood: Lady Mastermind and Omega Sentinel. Also, for some weird reason, Rogue decides she doesn't trust anyone else to keep an eye on Sabertooth and Mystique close to her, but even though their both under observation, they obviously come into play as part of the team.

Carey's got a great pace going, interesting villains (most of them new -- I think), and even though somethings could do with a little more explanation (like what did Cannonball and Omega Sentinel do at the end there), it was a very fun read).

I really had high hopes for this but it's absolutely a lame duck. Instead of revitalizing the Star Wars universe, which this clearly had the potential of doing, it read more like a would-be Firefly/Serenity. Which, you know, could be a good thing, if the characters were at all interesting or did anything worthwhile.

What a shame. I really wanted to like this.

I remember reading this one in high school with fondness. Unfortunately, it really doesn't hold up to the test of time.

Bruce Wayne is running around the world with his mask off, but his shirt unbuttoned so that everyone can see his costume's insignia. But ultimately, he gets his butt kicked and the story isn't so much about him. It's about Azrael.

Azrael's cool enough. Nice costume, fiery blades that come out of his forearms like Wolverine's claws (only he can shoot them like projectiles at people). But really, my suspension of belief breaks at how easily Alfred lets Azrael know who Bruce Wayne really is as well as Wayne's choice of outfit. And all in all, this really is just a build up to the Knightfall arc (which would've been more interesting itself if it had been about Dick Grayson/Nightwing, and not Azrael).

Quesada's artwork is nice enough, at least.

A twisted, twisty tale of Victorian Era macabre. The writing is elegant and the images it evokes are as haunting as they are beautiful.

I can't wait to read this again.

Pretty good Hellboy arc -- it definitely brings the Weird, which is one of the best things about Hellboy. How weird? At one point the Baba Yaga French kisses a goat. That kind of weird.

Mignola did only the story this time but Duncan Fegredo's art is pretty fantastic and close to his style.

That said, despite all the bizarre stuff missing, some of the old Hellboy magic from Wake the Devil and The Conqueror Worm seems to be missing this time out. Maybe it's a distinct lack of the BPRD?
