I thought maybe you would get other responses and you could weigh the votes of yes or no. I said no because I found the book boring and meandering compared to its reputation. It is a love story that takes place in the country side of Japan. Nothing much happens that appeals to me outside of the minds of the characters.
If you were just interested in Murakami, I would recommend Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. It is a magical realism story with some science fiction tendencies. If the romance story sounds more interesting to you then go for it. It seems to be very popular, and maybe I have lowered your expectations enough to enjoy it more than I did.
because it is murakami at his most usual and un-murakami. you might as well read anyone if you are going to read norwegian wood. not that it is a bad book. it is not. it is beautifully written. it is just not why people read murakami, in my opinion.
