  • Besame Mucho

    by Carlos Gonzalez
    • Rated 5 stars

Gonzalez shows how children and adults might be treated with equal respect and unconditional love. Full of anecdotes, his humorous style was sometimes a bit sarcastic, but it did make it easier to read. In the first half he supports breastfeeding, co-sleeping and inclusion of children in the family tribe as part of the natural flow of how things have worked for thousands of years. In the second half he critiques several other authors and texts from the 1700s to the present that offer advice that ranges from poor to abusive, and suggests that parents have have the ability and knowledge to care for their children with love and respect.

  • Parenting Well in a Media Age: Keeping Our Kids Human

I was so pleased to hear someone articulate what I'd been trying to place my finger on: what needs are not being met by watching television. A parent-child bond, an interior life, the ability to "make images", creative expression and contribution.

This was the perfect choice for storytimes around a community tree planting. Nice pictures too.

This is a great read for a mixed bilingual audience, and for very young or nonreaders.

Pretty pictures, a bit didactic in the rhyming, but hey, its a book about peace. We could use more of those.

I had this book as a child, and was delighted by the colorful pictures and really off-beat vocabulary and story.

  • Inside Out

Colorful illustrations, and surprisingly authentic presentation of spirituality for the younger set. Held my 2 and 4 year olds' attention. And a lovely resonance with the unschooling idea of living and learning from the inside out.

  • Storycatcher: Making Sense of Our Lives through the Power and Practice of Story
    • Rated 5 stars

Made me take an active look at storytelling with a variety of examples of how stories surround, fill and create our lives. I happened to read it while working on a family history project and I thought a lot about our collective version of family history, the stories we choose to remember and how we tell them.

A definite trip for me into seeing things another way. He dragged me the reader, through rocky and difficult stories, to a place of comfort and hope. Really a worthwhile read.
