I thought this book could have been so much more than a love story. I wanted to know more about the Japanese internment in concentration camps during WWII but the story ended up being more of a love story. I think I would have liked it better if the main characters had been a little older. They just seemed to mature to be 13. I thought the plot was very predictable. I was waiting for a surprise ending but it never came.

The author tells the story of his wife's journey with cancer and his own grief after her death. It is well-written and very detailed but could be a bit depressing for some.

Parts of this book were interesting. The author's grandfather was the inventor of Sweet And Low (sugar substitute. Actually the product was already invented, he just invented putting it into those little packets. Part of the story is about the history of artificial sweeteners (that's the interesting part) and the other half is about his family history. (Not so interesting).

Judy Collins was a popular folk singer in the 60's. She lived through a lot. This is a very candid look at her struggle with alcoholism and relationships. She had long term relationships with several well known men. Her story about her son is heartbreaking. There is a little history here too. If you are interested in the history of folk music Judy was one of the ground breakers. Very interesting and couldnt put it down.

I didnt really know anything about the Wonderland Killings. I've heard of John Holmes but didnt know anything about him. I still wouldnt know if I hadnt researched it. This book will tell you almost nothing about the murders or what happened afterwards. This book is all about the author. It is wayyyyy too detailed about everything she went through. She doesnt explore the backgrounds of the other people involved but she gives her history practically minute by minute from the time she was born. It could have been a better story if it had been delved into a little deeper but it reads more like a diary. I stuck with it hoping it would get better but it didnt. Usually when I read a book about spousal abuse I end up thinking how strong the woman was to have survived all that but this book left me thinking how dumb she was.

The first half of the book is mostly about the TV show and the author's struggle with self-confidence and body image. Anyone who is a fan of the show will enjoy this backstage look at a beloved show, although there is no dirt or throwing stones here. The second half of the book is about the health problems she suffered as a result of faulty breast implants and how she almost lost her life and ended up with Lupus as a result and became an activist for women who experienced similar difficulties. Very interesting and inspirational.

A very introspective look at her life and losses. Not at all what I thought it would be. This is not a memoir where she says first I did this and then I did that and look at all the famous people I know. Its not a tell-all of her marriage or relationship with her famous father, Johnny Cash. It's more a look at how her experiences have helped her grow as a person and how she dealt with the losses of several close family members within a short amount of time. As I have also dealt with several deaths of family members in the past year, it was a very raw, emotional book for me.

Not the best one I've read by this author. At 431 pages it could have been about 200 pages shorter.

  • The Best Kind of Different: Our Family's Journey with Asperger's Syndrome
    • Rated 5 stars

A memoir about the author's journey with a child with Asperger's Disorder. This could have been my book. It brought back a lot of memories. I went through so much of the same things with my child who is now an adult. I was glad that this wasnt a book about treatments and therapies. Most books I've read about Asperger's and autism go on and on about diets and therapies, most of which are non-existent in our rural area. The author doesnt endorse any diets or therapies. This book is more about letting others know that there are people going through the same things they are going through.

At first I really liked this book but after a while it was just too much detail. If you want to read about Patrick's (Buddy) cancer jouney minute by minute by minute, every gory detail then this book is for you. Personally, I didnt need to know how his bowels were doing on a certain day. Oh, and I get it. She really loves him. (She told us at least 100 times). At least it didnt repeat what was written in the previous book The Time Of My Life. Some parts were really interesting but it was just way too detailed.
