If it weren't for that uppity ol' Jane Austen I'd love your bookshelf (LOL). Agree with you about "Love in the Time of Cholera", from your praise of Marquez' writing style to the creepiness of that particular story.

I think you would like the real story of the pandemic of 1918.
You will see it on my list.
I read it a few years ago, but it is a must read for the current outbreak background of the swine flu,
It was so huge that the world was affected by it

I am a historical fiction fan for sure. I earned a history degree nearly a decade ago. The Midwife's Tale was an assigned reading for one of my social history classes. It was one of the few books purchased for a class that I did not resale after finishing at the end of the semester. I have since reread the book and still enjoyed how Ulrich was able to produce such a vivid image of early family life from Martha's journal. I remember still now a passage in which Martha was voicing her frustration about her day and how she had to scrape off the dried eggs from her pans after breakfast one morning after everyone else had left to do chores outside the house. Passages like that really made Martha seem so real. Even though she lived hundreds of years before you and I, we can totally relate to her. No wonder why the book won the Pulitzer Prize for History. PBS even did a documentary on the book, which I saw several years ago. Have you read Year of Wonders or March both by Geraldine Brooks? I am currently reading March, and read Year of Wonders a few months ago, both really good historical fictions.

    Hello,
I came across your list, we have alot of common books. I saw that you didn't enjoy 'The Shipping News' either. I thought I might just be weird, seeing how everyone else seemed to give the book high marks. I noticed that you didn't give 'The Secret History of the Pink Carnation' high marks. That is one that I was interested in reading. How was it?

Kelly you are my hero reader. So many books. I love that you rated them and wrote a comment too. I may have to check out a few. I actually have read a bit but it is remembering the the title and then remembering if they were good enough to make my list that is the challenge.
