"Let me tell you something, funny boy... You know that little stamp? The one that says New York Public Library? Well, that may not mean anything to you, but that means a lot to me. One whole helluva lot. Sure, go ahead, laugh if you want to. I've seen your type before -- flashy, making the scene, flaunting convention. Yeah, I know what you're... more »

  • Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War (Vintage Departures)
    • Rated 4 stars

This was a really interesting read. I read this after watching the Ken Burns' Civil War documentary and it was an excellent complement. It also had some really humorous moments and felt almost like a Bryson "Walk In the Woods" type book with Rebs.

A great graphic novel and a fantastic memoir of growing up in Iran during the Iran-Iraq war. Highly recommend for anyone interested in other cultures.

Excellent novel that I would highly recommend to anyone with the patience to get through Eco's 'First 100 Pages Test' (as I call it). Eco is well-known to be a difficult read but this book is actually quite an easy read and very funny.

  • The Grizzly Maze: Timothy Treadwell's Fatal Obsession with Alaskan Bears
    • Rated 3 stars

This book was interesting if for nothing else than it's vastly different view of Timothy Treadwell and his mental health and motivations than those that were portrayed in the movie Grizzly Man. The author is not an unbiased one and his views of Treadwell, ecowarriors, hunting, etc...are spelled out throughout the book however he does redeem the problems with his writing and his inability to remain objective with some illuminating ruminations on the whole nature of the tragedy towards the end of the book. A book for those interested in the Treadwell story or for people who enjoyed Krakauer's Into the Wild.

I struggled with this book a great deal. It was not only difficult to read but hard for me to really form my opinion. The writing really captures the mental illness (to put it lightly) of the main character and even though I pride myself on being able to read almost anything without batting an eye there were sections of this book that were extremely difficult to read. However, it was like nothing I have read before and Ellis does an amazing job of portraying a man in a constant cycle of psychosis and decompensation. It was interesting and insightful but not for the faint of heart and I am glad to have finished it and that I now never have to read it again.

Classic of druggly lit which I actually like but for the life of me I have no clue what this book is about. You will feel drugged if you read it so you can save money and your health that way...

At first the writing style was keeping me from appreciating this book however once I realized that it was written originally as a news piece and once the book began to progress I really found it engrossing and disturbing. I second the reviewer who stated that every American should be required to read this book.
