Fond Memories Concerning Books
I remember reading the Encyclopedia when I was little, circa Grade 1 to Grade 6. I read Grolier's Children Encyclopedia from A-N... I will never forget the first item in that book- AARDVARK, a pig-like creature that feeds on ants. When I was younger, my mother would ask us to read to her aloud excerpts from particular books, articles or magazines. I have always chosen the Encyclopedia because it was filled with pictures. It was a very daunting tasks at first, quite similar to you declaiming in front of a class. My mom would also comment about my diction and pronunciation. She also tests whether I have deciphered the material effectively by giving quizzes-like evaluation of some sort. hahaa. I had no choice; it was either that or no TV or playing.
The Little Prince was the first book I ever bought with my own money. Most of the books I had were presents from special individuals (ninong, friends, parents, titas). I was also very close with our (elementary and high school) librarian. I was given the privilege to borrow as many books as I want and return it longer than usual. I spend my free time at the library; nonetheless such occasion does not usually happen because I am always preoccupied with various extracurricular activities.
The moment I had sufficient money to buy whatever I want, I went on a book shopping spree. I bought all the books I have been eying years before. Such action resulted to me not eating a decent lunch for almost a month. I still engage in such acts up to now, so don't wonder if one day I am not eating properly or rejecting your invite for lunch. hahaa.
I collect books, meaning I just store them in my book case. I rarely have the time to read them all, though I do try my best to finish a title every two weeks.
I have gained also a lot of friends through books. These include my college buddies that borrow my readings, the people I borrow books from, Kuya from the picturesque bookstore in UP AS walk and his assistants, the reserve section library assistant in the social science section of the main library, and many many more.
Books for me are not merely instruments of learning- they are mechanisms to meet and greet new people. Books enable me to socialize and to access the people's trust. Very few might have noticed this but when we lend others copies of our books, we are telling them that we trust them; that we are confident that they will return our most priced possession in the same stature that it has been before. My life has been filled with books of varying sorts. There are suspense-thrillers, romance, comics, inspiring poetry and enlightening fictions.
