“Compared to other Michael Crichton books Next doesn't have a cohesive story. Sure in the end a lot of the angles are tied together, and tied together nicely with a big bow as well, but overall it seems like about 12 different threads that are only loosely related by a series of events that happen around the world. I would have preferred that Next focus more on some of the more fleshed out stories, as opposed to giving page space to some of the weaker ones (the swearing ape and the glowing turtles).
Where Next does succeed is in telling a cautionary tale of where genetics is heading and how the direction can't be good for anyone. There is certainly some scary stuff going on if Crichton's research is correct. As with State of Fear, I think Crichton may have gotten a little to preachy here straying from what his readers really want and that is a good story, with good science. The science was there (more than maybe we needed) but the story wasn't.”
