  • The Boys Volume 1: The Name of the Game
    • Rated 4 stars

Over the top, raunchy, ultra violent and a totally interesting look at how Ennis views superheroes.

  • The Amber Room: A Novel
    • Rated 3 stars

While not as exciting as Berry's later books, The Amber Room does enough right to keep you more than entertained throughout.

  • Vixen 03
    • Rated 3 stars

As a fan of Dirk Pitt stories, Vixen 03 seems even more scatter shot than Raise the Titanic. That's not to say it isn't entertaining, because it is and if you enjoy Cussler's other Dirk Pitt works then Vixen 03 will be a fun read.

  • Hannibal Rising
    • Rated 2 stars

95% of this book reads as a World War II revenge story. The final 5% read as a Hannibal Lecter story. Neither is very good.

Why Harris felt the need to soil his star character's mystique is beyond me. It's almost as if he had an idea for a World War II revenge story and decided to call him Hannibal Lecter to sell more copies.

  • Raise the Titanic!
    • Rated 3 stars

Out of the first four Dirk Pitt books, this one holds up the worst especially with the information now available about the Titanic. With that said though the book is a good, fun read. However Raise the Titanic is not your typical Dirk Pitt book. Pitt is relegated to background duty for more than three quarters of the book and by the time he takes center stage the story is just about over. If you are looking for a fun adventure story (and if you can suspend your belief a hefty bit) Raise the Titanic will entertain you.

  • I Hate Other People's Kids
    • Rated 3 stars

I Hate Other People's Kids is short enough that the humor doesn't wear thin although it doesn't have quite as much bite as the title suggests. There are more than a few items in the book that will bring a smile to your face (and maybe even a slight gigle) but nothing that is going to have you holding your sides in hysterical laughing pain. Certainly good for a short casual read though.

Compared to other Michael Crichton books Next doesn't have a cohesive story. Sure in the end a lot of the angles are tied together, and tied together nicely with a big bow as well, but overall it seems like about 12 different threads that are only loosely related by a series of events that happen around the world. I would have preferred that Next focus more on some of the more fleshed out stories, as opposed to giving page space to some of the weaker ones (the swearing ape and the glowing turtles).

Where Next does succeed is in telling a cautionary tale of where genetics is heading and how the direction can't be good for anyone. There is certainly some scary stuff going on if Crichton's research is correct. As with State of Fear, I think Crichton may have gotten a little to preachy here straying from what his readers really want and that is a good story, with good science. The science was there (more than maybe we needed) but the story wasn't.
