Hi! I noticed that you gave The Grapes of Wrath only one star. Was it really that bad? I've wanted to read Steinbeck for a while and I just bought The Winter of Our Discontent, so should I even bother to read it ?

Thanks for letting me know! I thought the movie was cute, too. And I know what you mean... I think maybe it's because of the English ] Czech translation. I read it in French (for practice) and it was the very same thing. But that's part of what I liked about the book. It's a more natural way to write in a journal (at least in English...) unlike some novels that are journals with huge long descriptions and lots of dialogue. I used to keep a journal and there's no way I'd remember those kinds of details!

My first day of school was quite boring. Everyone were really tired and sleepy, because the funky winter break sleeping pattern and it was hard for almost everyone to get up today. I've read first three books in English, I have the last book also, but I haven't had the time to read it yet. I think that the movie was good in it's own way. I've heard a lot my friends, who haven't read the books yet, love it, but the other ones, who have read the books, don't like the movie that much. I think that Twilight is a very romantic and sweet movie, it's a really good romance movie, but it wasn't the Twilight from the book. I hope that you understand what I mean.. :)

About the SAT, I don't know how my critical reading and writing scores were so high, because I really do suck at grammar and it's impossible to understand, what the author wants to say in short paragraph. I was really surprised by myself. I really thought that the only one over 600, will be math, but yeah, we know what happened in the end. ;)
Yes, we have the final exams only in the 12 grade - luckily.

We have final exams as well. We have one compulsory exam, that everyone who want to graduate have to do - the final essay, and then we have to choose at least two more national exams. To gradute, we have to take 5 exams, so if I choose only 3 natinal exams, then I have to take 2 school exams also. I'm planning on taking math (national), English (nat), German(natio.) and maybe art history (school exam) or history(nat). The exams start in april, with the essay. After that we don't have classes anymore, only consultations on exam subjects.

Luckily the private schools in Estonia are weaker then most of the (elite) public schools. I have to say, your school system is really confusing, ;) Our primary school has also grades 1-9 and then we have to change schools or apply back to our old school for the 10-12 grade. My old school ended with the 9th grade (some tiny schools are this way, too few students to have 10-12 grades), so I had to change schools. And luckily I ended up at my current school, the admission tests and the interview were really hard, but I got in. I think that, when I found out I got in, was the best day of my life. I was actually waitlisted at first, but it turned out that I was 3rd on the list, so I got in really quickly. When I found out that I was waitlisted, I was soo sad, after a while I decided to move on and focus on the second school of my choice, a math-physics special school. The 10 before my primary school graduation I got a SMS from the school, that congrats, you are now part of our schools class of 2011!!! It was really the best day of my life, but I hope that the next best day of my life will be somehow connected with Harvard, or some other really good college!
Your school has some really cool selective courses, like conversation in English language or literary seminary. So far I've studied Estonian (of course), German (8 years), English (5 years), Russian (3 years, hardly know the basics) and French (just started last week of the school, last week, today it's my last day of winter break). And like I mentioned I'd really like to study Spanish also. I really love languages! :D

I go to a qymnasium/ secondary school/high school as well. My school is special because it's the second best secondary school in the entire country. It was really hard to get into, but I really hope it's worth it. My school doesn't have a specialization, I don't think any of public schools in Estonia are, and we don't have almost any private schools. But some of the schools, like mine, have three different courses/directions/specialization (don't know how to describe it) : humanitarian- (primary stress is on history, art history, music history, literature, different languages; french and latin, and spanish), math-physics and biology-chemistry. We have all subjects, but we get those subjects more. I'm personally in humanitarian, of course. I just don't understand chemistry! :) I like math and physics, but I love languages and art history. What's your school like?

They dont' offer GG DVDs in Estonia either, but sister just gave me GG season 4 for Christmas, she ordered it from Amazon. :) I'm so happy, it's my favorite season, because Rory starts Yale and Luke&Lorelai get together.
And I think that your English is way better them mine, I suck at grammar. :(
And about the financial aid, I from somewhere that it's about 60 000 $(in a year), when you are concerned for full financial aid, but I'm no that sure. It seems to big of an amount. But if it's true, I really glad, because my parents make much less than 60 000. :)
Halie is from the US. She talked about her plans in RBC. She mentioned something applying to the University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins, Boston U, USC, UCSD, UCSB, CSU Long Beach and San Fransisco State (last few are safeties).

I just noticed your other note :) Oops.. I once mentioned to my mom and to my dad that I plan to go to a college in the US, but they didn't like it at all. My mom is really against it, she's a family person and she would take it very good if one of her daughters would live so far away. That makes me sad, but I really want this and I guess they just have to accept it. Have you told your parents?
I'm really hoping that my parents earn as little as it's neccesary to get the need-based financial aid. I know it's awful to think it, but still.. I know that if have been accepted, but you can't afford it and you have shown them that, you'll be granted with financial aid at least in the Ivy League schools. They will pay all or at least part of the tuition in some way or another. One thing is sure that I'll apply to various colleges and universities, but if I wont get financial aid, I will not go.
I know that halie is applying to colleges next year, she's a junior. So she has to take SAT's quite soon.

I know!! I'm sooo jealous! I want to be that smart and lucky as well. One of my new year's promises is that I'm going to read at least half of the books on the 101 books for college-bound readers (collegeboard.com) in English and right now I'm reading Beowulf. It's really hard, I'm reading it with a dictionary besides me. But I have to say, I like it. I really hope it improves my English.

Oh, I just remembered a site that halie from RBC gave me, it's quite helpful also. I love to read the profiles. every year when the decision time arrives (1st april) some accepted students put their profiles up - their grades, sat scores, extra curriculum, etc... I really love those! :) Plus they are really helpful, I found out what my extra curriculum should be: I'm volunteering at the local dog pound and I'm thinking about learning Spanish in the language school.
    Here's the site: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com
Hope it's helpful as well! :)

You are ashamed?? I'm ashamed I've read only 1984 and Animal Farm, nothing else. So sad!! I really want to read his books, but I don't have enough time. So many books, so little time. ;) I have one of his biographies as well, Orwell: A Wintry ..... by Jeffrey Meyers. I haven't read it yet though. What I love in his books is that his writing style is simple and easy to understand for everyone. And that he gives so much feelings and thoughts with so little words.
I'm really glad that I've found someone who's also so interested in going to a US college, I don't know anyone (international) besides my sis, who also got that from me. :) She just started watching Gilmore Girls and decided that trance isn't for her and that she loves indie rock :) Don't want to brag, but I think I'm doing quite good job with her.
By the way, here's a link where you can take SAT practice tests and questions and also I recommend to you the College Search MatchMaker. You just insert your preferences and your wishes and it gives you some really good suggestions. I got Bentley U, Brown U, Columbia U, Dickinson C, Fordham U, Gettysburg C, Harvard C (;D ;D ), Lafayette C, Princeton U, Skidmore C, Stanford U, Vassar C and Wesleyan U. It's http://www.collegeboard.com . Hope it helps.

Actually you need. You have to take SAT I Reasoning Test and if I'm not wrong 3 SAT II Subject Tests. Some schools don't want your scores, but those schools are not that good either. If your first language isn't English some schools want you to take TOEFL or in some cases IELTS too.
I don't know exactly what I want to study, but I have some thoughts. Maybe English language and literature, History, Art History, for a while I was thinking about Journalism too, and/or prelaw. I wanted to become a judge or a lawyer, when I was younger. Now I've thought about book translator.
I also noticed that you love George Orwell. I love him!!! He's my favorite writer and 1984 is my favorite book. :)

I feel exactly the same, that it looks like an inapproachable thing. I'm in 10th grade, in the first grade in high school, so I have technically only 2 years left, before all this. I took SAT I practice test the other day. I did really badly. :( :) I got math 580 (really disappointed, math is my strongest subject), critical reading 670 (proud of that) and writing 650. But I want to get t least over 750 in my real test.

All Ivy League colleges plus some other good private colleges offer need-based financial aid for international students. :)
I was thinking about England also, but I don't know. US colleges seem better to me, the experience seems more interesting to me.
Have you already thought which other colleges you are applying also? And sorry, my English is quite bad, :) Oh, and in which grade are you right now?

Hi! Harvard fascinates me too, but I'm quite sure that I wont get in. My main goal is to get in to a college in US, right now I'm thinking about Columbia, or even Brown. I don't know if I'm even that good to get into those schools also, but I'm still going to try and I'm still applying to Harvard also, because if I don't do it, I might be sorry for the rest of my life. And I don't want regret anything like that. :) Are you thinking about going to a US college as well?
