I can't remember another book like this that had me saying YES, ME, and TRUE so often, that had me underlining and making notes on every other page, that helped me better understand my role as an introvert in the world, that gave me so much to think about and write about and reflect back on. This is a self-understanding book, and, I believe, a book that every introvert (and, actually, extrovert) should read.

I love everything about this book. Everything. From the structure to the language (it reads rounded, cold: the perfect intersection of form and content) to the characters to the emphasis on the past and what that makes us.

"...it's a treasure if you love it. It doesn't matter how much it costs, or whether anyone else wants it. If you love it, you will treasure it, does that make sense?" (29)

    Wild

    by Cheryl Strayed
    • Rated 5 stars

Bill Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods" is one of my favorites, a journey in miles and words. "Wild" is that and more, a book that I didn't want to stop reading. Perhaps part of it is because I, too, go hiking to try to heal myself, to get to another level of myself that can't be reached in daily life. I don't have the history that Cheryl has, but I was with her the entire way. It's powerful, it's uncomfortable, it's sad, it's beautiful.

Gorgeous writing and images. I loved it, so my four-star rating is my own fault because I took too long to read it and had forgotten certain connections by the end.

Wonderful writing, powerful story. I wouldn't even call it a crime novel; it's just a good literary novel.

It's good! That story that you just fall into and want to follow through. The writing is tight, balanced, paced well.

So I have to admit that I originally started this book for the cover, plus the fact that I knew that it involved writers in some way, but...wow. This is my favorite novel of the year so far for the spot-on characters and scenes and emotions that I want to keep with me. I'm usually a language snob and only want to read a novel if it's beautiful, but this book is written so well that it is beautiful in atmosphere. Hoorah to Norman on this kick-ass first novel!

Some lovely writing and some slower moments. Overall, a quick read and a sweet and funny reminder of finding/recovering a life. It made me grumpy, though, because I saw too much of my own relationship in hers!
